It's just an ordinary day around here (and why I think that's good)

Today's chores . . .

Laundry,

cleaning up the kitchen and getting dinner ready,

keeping the fire stoked,

baking bread,

making yogurt,

and maybe a little knitting in the afternoon.

It's the holiday season, and we all feel the pressure to being doing "holiday work" -- baking holiday cookies, making or shopping for gifts, wrapping Christmas presents, and on and on.

Ordinary is good!

Ordinary keeps us grounded in what matters to our families. In the long run, whether or not I baked Christmas cookies on December 4, won't matter to my husband and kids. But keeping up with daily chores, like laundry, cooking and general housekeeping, will matter. After all, eating cookies for dinner, and wearing dirty socks, isn't in my family's best interest.

It's nice to have just an ordinary day, right in the midst of the holiday frenzy. What are your chores for the day?

  1. Oh, it all looks beautiful to me Lili. Ordinary is the best and makes me very happy. How I love your little fire : )

I probably won't be doing any blog posts until after Christmas, so I wish you a joyful and peaceful Christmas x Lesley

  2. My chores for the day were to be up and dressed early to let the floor man in who is working in the living room. Next, I put bread in the bread machine and soup in the crock pot. Soon I go to work, after which I hope to have time to get our Christmas letter copied. The writing is finally done and pictures have been chosen. Oh, and perhaps my biggest chore of the day is trying to keep the cats out of wet varnish on the floors.

    1. Your day sounds busy, live and learn! Good luck keeping the cats out of trouble!! I can see it now, little kitty hairs speckling the new floor finish.

  3. I love that keeping the fire going falls under the "normal" category. My inner pyromaniac is jealous!

    1. Step away from the matches, and no one will get hurt, Cat!
Stay warm! I saw the forecast for your area -- brrrrrr.

  4. We're expecting our first frost. It's supposed to be below freezing for at least 10 days--and down into the mid-20's. I'm worried we're going to lose our citrus trees. We're out covering them with old sheets today. They can make it through a couple of hours of 30º, but 10 days might do them ALL in. Plus I am trying to do laundry and make food and clean the kitchen.

    1. Hi Brandy,
I sure hope that your citrus make it through this freeze. You're doing what you can, though, and now the rest is out of your hands.
Trying to keep the home running, at the same time, must be quite a challenge!
May all this go as well as possible!

  5. Hooray for ordinary! I haven't had much of that lately. Today I rebelled and instead of doing the bazillion things I needed to get done, I met up with my sister-in-law for a little shopping and lunch. I still managed to get 2 loads of laundry done, clean the kitchen, volunteer at my daugher's school, pick up our Christmas cards, cook dinner, and eventually I'll clean up from dinner after my little cyber-break ...

Thanks for the peek into your extraordinary ordinary day!

    1. HI Kris,
Sounds like a great day out that you had! And you got lots of work done, too.
I'm on the west coast, so it's off to get dinner ready for my family! have a wonderful evening!

  6. An ordinary day is perfect. I don't need to have special activities to feel a day was productive. By the way, I LOVE your sink. I miss those big deep farmhouse sinks, wish I could install one here.

    1. Hi Lois,
Ordinary is so nice. Even when its a busy ordinary day, I feel somewhat rested.
I can fit every single super large cooking pot or pan into that sink to soak and wash. It's one of my favorite things about my kitchen. Glad you like it!
