Happy Memorial Day!

What are your plans for today?

We're heading out to the beach for a breakfast, "out". (Can't get any more "out" than outdoors!) We're packing apples, yogurt and homemade donuts (the kind made with canned biscuit dough). We have several thermoses, so everyone is on their own to provide their beverage of choice (coffee, tea, cocoa, milk).

If we can get out of the house early enough, the beach will be pretty much deserted. It's beautiful, there, in the early hours of the day.

Just a fun way to spend time together as a family.

Have a wonderful day!

  1. Have a great day. The beach in the morning with a picnic breakfast sounds perfect. Especially since it's probably rare these days when you can get all of your family together to do something like this.

    1. Good morning, live and learn,
It does get harder and harder to pull us all together. one daughter has been away all weekend, and just got back last night.

It's overcast this morning, so I'm guessing the only other people who will be at the beach are dog walkers. (And a good morning for cocoa, as overcast means chilly.)

      Have a great Memorial Day!

  2. That sounds great and fun! We too enjoy getting out of the house earlier, it is so much easier to get around town without all the traffic that comes with the afternoon hours. Have fun! :)

    1. Hi Belinda,
I imagine later this afternoon the roads will be packed with folks coming home from weekend time away. We'll be back at home, working in the garden, then a cook-out in the evening.

I hope you have a great Memorial Day!

  3. Have a wonderful breakfast at the beach! That sounds like fun and a time everyone will cherish and remember for years to come. Nothing like walking on an empty beach at sunrise....grilling and gardening in the afternoon sounds like a perfect way to spend the day.

We have plans for some shopping and I still have to finish my lei. Other than that it will be another day to play catch up with the chores.

    1. Hi YHF,
How was your Memorial Day? Did you get that lei finished? Catching up on chores seems to be an ongoing theme with me, as well.

The beach had several families, yesterday, despite very windy and chilly weather. But it was lovely, nonetheless. And a very nice break from work.

    2. Hmmm...just two days ago and I can't remember exactly what we did lol... We shopped and got some good deals at Wal-Mart, clearance and coupon finds and shopped for some work parts at Home Depot. Had a quick lunch at Jack in the box, another coupon 2 for 1. I think I baked some cupcakes in the microwave that afternoon. I bought some short dated Greek yogurt in my last Costco shopping and made a batch a few days ago, not bad so made two more batches. The recipe called for a box of cake mix and 2 cups Greek yogurt. I improvised and added to that, a can of garbanzo beans pureed with a can of water, to stretch the batter and add fiber and nutrition. It turned out decent, but at least I feel less guilty eating these cupcakes lol. From the two boxes of cake mix, I managed to make more than three dozen half sized cupcakes. I chose to make cupcakes smaller because I always eat only half a cupcake and my dad loves these smaller sized cakes to snack on, easier to bite into. I love baking in the microwave with a silicone baking pan, just spray the bottom with cooking spray, good for about two uses before I have to wash it clean. Two and a half minutes and it is done.

I'm almost finished with the lei. I bought orange yarn to make a ilima like yarn strand, that went nicely with the white rattail yarn cord pikake like strand I made, then wrapped both strands around an artificial Maile lei (purchased for around $5) The yarn and cord were purchased at thrift stores for $4. I used brown wooden large holed bead from my stash to hold the dollar bills, each bill bolded according style and poked through the bead, then spread out to look like a bow tie. I searched the internet for some money lei ideas and I couldn't see any that would work for the lei I was making. There was one that I liked but worried that the money didn't look securely tied on.

Other than that, it was a nice peaceful day, and I'm thankful for that.

  4. OK, let's see if Google Chrome lets me comment, since Firefox won't ... I love your idea of a quiet beach breakfast and can't wait to try it with my kids this summer (it's been on my bucket list for a couple of years now--I need to just.do.it!). And the bring-your-own-beverage idea is great. Enjoy your holiday.

    1. Hi Kris,
Chrome is working better for me on blogs than Safari had been. My son tells me that Google is putting a LOT of resources into Chrome these days.

Oh the beach is always wonderful at breakfast time. It's peaceful to just sit and drink coffee or tea. When my kids were younger, they'd play in the sand, while I enjoyed some quiet time. And, it's a forced break from work and chores. That's always nice. I try to plan a very simple breakfast. In past years, it's been as simple as everyone pouring some beverage into a container for themselves, and us stopping at the donut shop on the way. Not super-duper healthy, but easy, fairly cheap, and fun.

I hope you had a peaceful day, yesterday.
