From my late September garden

My vegetable garden was not terribly productive this year. However, I am finding a few things to bring in, anyway.

Two lovely orange pumpkins
These are pie pumpkins and will be cooked up later next month.

It's time to cut rosemary for flavored vinegar and drying for seasoning. I'll be baking rosemary bread in the next couple of months, too.

The basil is gorgeous. This is one plant and it looks like a bush. I've been using it as I can. But also, I have cut quite a bit for freezing. We love tomato-basil soup on a cold winter day.

Minced basil, along with garden tomatoes, was used to top a frittata for last night's dinner. Yum!

  1. I grew some variegated basil for the first time this year and it did great. However, the flavor is stronger than the basil I'm used to (like in your picture) and I haven't quite figured out how to use it to our liking. But it is
time to start drying it to experiment over the winter.

    1. Hi live and learn,
you may be in luck, as dried basil loses some flavor compared to fresh. Hope it taste more to your liking once it's dried.

  2. I have a very explosive basil plant right now also. It was almost dead when we moved all three basil and a big pot of rosemary to the front yard. Apparently, they liked the move and have started to grow all over again. I got the most harvest out of the basil plants last week than I did all summer when they were in their old place. I guess I need to rotate where they live once in a while. I have a large cookie sheet lined with basil drying on top of my kitchen cupboard right now. When it's dry, I put it in my blender and then I have a nice bunch of dried and aromatic basil. It is much stronger tasting than the store bought dried basil. I will dry some rosemary a bit later. Those I don't put in a blender since I like mine removed from the stem and then stored in a jar. I like the "spikes" whole. Not sure what they are called. So good on chicken or potatoes.

    1. How interesting, Alice. I wonder if moving the plant to a spot of different light conditions stimulated the growth, like the plant thought, "oh now it's really summer." For what to call that part of rosemary, I think needles, leaves or needle-like leaves is accepted. I see a range of what people call the edible part. And I absolutely agree -- chicken and potatoes are two favorite foods of mine to flavor with rosemary! I'm thawing a whole chicken right now and will use a lot of rosemary for it. I just need the potatoes.

  3. Oh what beautiful pumpkins, Lili. And I love your basil and rosemary too. I was looking around Lowe's yesterday for herbs, but alas they are gone for the season for now, but they had plenty of fall mums and decorative peppers right now that are loaded with peppers. SO pretty. I love this time of year.

    1. Hi Belinda,
That's too bad they didn't have any herbs this time of year. How nice a potted herb for the kitchen window would have been. I noticed a lot of beautiful mums at our local Fred Meyer the other day. 'Tis the season!

  4. I am so envious of your basil. I really struggle with herb that I LOVE so much. Your pumpkins look good too. I have already processed my pumpkins into pickles, but am on the lookout for more pumpkin to turn into pie filling, etc.

    1. Hi Jayne,
Most years, my basil struggles, too. But this year it did really well, and I have no clue why, so I can't try to duplicate the results. Your pumpkin pickles sound really delicious. I may have some time to turn one of my pumpkins into pickles. We'll see. I'll ask you more about those later. I hope you find pie pumpkins at a good price.

  5. What great pumpkins☺Those will be fun for décor and so yummy. I just found a can of pumpkin yesterday. I think a pumpkin spice coffee and pumpkin bread are in my future. Basil seems to be one of those finicky plants for me. Yours is doing great. Hope you have a great day.
    Blessings,
    Patti

    1. Hi Patti,
I love pumpkins. I think they are the cheeriest thing of fall. Enjoy your pumpkin spice coffee and bread. Those sound delicious.
      Have a wonderful day, Patti!
