May's Grocery Haul

Since you've read my grocery plans for the month (in this post), I thought you might want to see what my May groceries actually look like -- The deals, surprises, size of packages, variety of foods, and some brief explanations of how I manage the larger sizes. If you have any questions, I am more than happy to 'splain (as in "Lucy, you've got some splaining to do").

I hope this works -- she says crossing fingers.

My apologies for the rough editing. After I taped this, I discovered it was too big (in MBs) for blogger and therefore, had to edit it down substantially.

Just a note: the bathroom tissue is not calculated in my grocery budget, but in a non-food household item budget, and the carrots are stored in the garage fridge, not the garage freezer.

    1. Hi Kathryn,
It's so nice to know that someone else from the Puget sound area is here! I'm very glad to share what I do to stretch our money. And in exchange, I learn a lot from what you and others share.
      Have a great weekend, Kathryn!

  2. Lili, I think this is the first time I have heard your voice. I am surprised, since I imagined your voice to be a bit lower and slower, like a teacher? I love watching videos at YouTube for all kinds of instructions. Have you thought of starting a YouTube channel?

Good for you that you are sticking to your shopping list, with all the store price comparisons and forethought about needs/wants and timing of any sales. I envy having your discipline. Because my husband is the primary cook in our household, I have to honor what he wants to buy too.

Thanks Alice, for your chiming in about the robot tool. I felt much better knowing this happened not just to me.

    1. I had problems with it for awhile, also, YHF. Seems to be better now. Go figure.

    4. Hi YHF,
I think we all assign voices to the text that we read based on our own experiences. And if my voice was higher and faster than you expected, that may also be in part due to I was trying to talk quickly and keep the video short.

I'm not sure about a youtube channel. One step at a time. But, if I make future videos for my blog, I may post them on youtube and link to them from here. It was tricky editing this one down so it would be acceptable by the blog-hosting platform.

You know, in all honesty, ever month I think that this low grocery budget just isn't going to be sustainable. I still don't know if I can continue this low after the next month. It's just something that I'm giving my all to, to see if this is even possible. If I didn't really try hard, then I wouldn't know if this low of a budget would be a possibility. So, that thought inspires me to stick to my budget and shopping plans as closely as I can.

Have issues with posting comments ended for you now that I've changed some of the settings?

    5. Commenting from my laptop as I am doing now is easier than from a tablet. But I rarely use my laptop nowadays. With the tablet, I still have that robot quiz, which is so annoying because I always seem to fail (need better reading glasses), but I don't have any quizzes on my laptop. The robot question self checks.

  3. Lovely to hear your calming voice!

I calculated my groceries out for April and it was a bit higher than normal because we went to an Amish store and stocked up on a few things that were not used in April but will be used for months to come. So that total is not true to the month. It was $200 more than it should have been but it really will be spread out over more time. With that said, it wasn't too bad. I will need to work better this month.

    1. Hi Alice,
How lucky you are to have the Amish store within driving distance. From what I've read, they often have good prices on bulk items.
I think your budget and spending sounds like it's working for you, and that is what really matters.

    1. Thank you, Cat. As I said to YHF, I am giving this my all. Better to try very hard to see if it's possible, than to never know.
      Have a great weekend!

  5. I am always surprised when I hear someone's voice and compare it to what I've been hearing in my head when I read. For me, you voice was a little higher, but not too far off.
Who was your camera person? It all worked well, especially for a first time.

    1. Funny, I thought Lili's voice sounded pretty much as I had imagined it.

Thanks for your grocery update, Lili.

    2. Hi live and learn,
I was my own camera person. I used a point and shoot camera that has a video function as an option. I'm not very camera savvy, but I'm trying to learn. This was my first, on-purpose video. I've made plenty of accidental videos when I pushed the wrong button.

Yeah, I know what you mean. When we only read text, our minds plug in a voice to the characters or people, based on our own experience. Perhaps you know someone in person who has sentence structure or vocabulary similar to mine, whose voice is on the low side.
