Retro Cooking: Creamed Chicken and Vegetables on Toast Points

An old time favorite using this recipe for cream of celery soup, some cooked chicken, and frozen broccoli -- Creamed Chicken and Vegetables on Toast. With cooked chicken and frozen vegetables, this was a quick supper, taking me under 30 minutes from start to table.

I left the cream soup in the saucepan and reheated the cooked chicken on the stove over Low heat while I made the toast and microwaved the broccoli (so I could drain off any liquid before adding to the soup and chicken).

My mom made a similar version of creamed chicken on toast points, only she used frozen mixed vegetables in place of the broccoli.

Super easy. I just wanted to show you how this scratch cream soup can be useful for suppers other than casseroles.

Does anyone else still eat creamed chicken on toast points or am I really dating myself here?

  2. When I was a kid, creamed chicken on biscuits was my favorite meal. I made it often and usually chose it for my birthday meal. Mine was made with a white sauce, but yours looks equally as good.

    1. Hi Live and Learn,
Yum. I can imagine the biscuits with creamed chicken were a treat. Not surprising that you'd ask for this on your birthday.

  3. I've never had creamed chicken that way, but love creamed chipped beef that way now and then. May have to put that in the dinner rotation before long.

  4. I do remember toast points with creamed chicken or chipped beef! I haven't made it in years because I always use rice with creamed chicken (my version of chicken ala king), but I will put it on the menu soon. Those retro recipes are the ultimate comfort food. I would love to resurrect some of those old recipes that have been forgotten - ham salad, soda cracker pie, creamy lime jello salad - That would be a fun topic for another day!

    1. Hi Ruthie,
Doing a topic on all of our favorite comfort foods is an excellent idea! We'll do that soon. Thank you for the suggestion.

  5. You are gettin' your retro on! :) I vaguely remember meals with toast points--like Cat, I think it was creamed chipped beef. I use my canned soups for tuna casserole and the dish where you combine the soup with rice and water and bake the chicken on top of it. It doesn't matter that my kids are "modern"--they still like it!

    1. Hi Kris,
Sometimes we just need a bit of that old comfort food cooking, don't we? And kids, too, seem to enjoy these hearty and creamy meals, at least mine have.

  6. I put it over homemade biscuits and use carrots not broccoli. Looks good Lili.

    1. Hi Cheryl,
Thank you. Another vote for over biscuits! I can see how carrots would be good, too.

  7. Like others, I think I remember toast points from my childhood. I'll have to check with my mother for which recipe. Currently, like Ruthie, I make a version of chicken a la king when I have leftover chicken or turkey. It uses a white sauce vs a canned or homemade cream soup, though it could certainly work with it too. Sometimes I serve it over rice, which is always good. But if I want to lower the carb load, I'll use light bread for toast points to save some carbs and calories.

    1. Hi Lynn,
I remember my mom using toast points when she needed a quick dinner, as toasting bread was quicker than making rice or noodles. That's a good point that using light bread would reduce carbs.
