Celebrating a Couple of Loved One's Birth Month

My two daughters have a birthday later this month. I've been celebrating their birth month with small goodies every day. I leave these treats, one each day, as surprises for them to find. One day it was a small box of raisins, another day a small piece of chocolate, another day an individual fruit cup, you get the picture. It's not so much the actual treats that I think makes them happy, but me taking the time to do this each of the days before their birthday. I also leave a brief note with each treat wishing them a happy day. I love surprising my family and putting smiles on their faces.

Today's treat was a baggie of pretzels. I had some pretzels leftover from when I dipped them in chocolate for Valentine's Day. But I'd been holding these back as a treat for sometime in the future instead of putting them out for us to snack on. (I don't buy pretzels very often.)

Anyway, I used bags from buying spices and cocoa powder that I'd washed and dried. These bags don't have zippers, so I needed something to tie them up with. The ribbon box is upstairs, near where my daughters were talking this morning. As I wanted to surprise them, I had to find some sort of tie or ribbon from my downstairs supplies. In my sewing stuff I have a bunch of fabric scraps. I used my pinking shears to cut "ribbons" from some black and white gingham scraps. I wanted to mention this as I've found that ribbons for tying gifts are a good use for narrow fabric scraps that don't seem to be big or wide enough for any other use.

As sappy as this sounds, I've been blessed to have family for whom I can do special things. It's a part of what gives me purpose.

  1. How's that song go? "Little things mean a lot." I think you demonstrate that quite well with these little treats. Who wouldn't want a little something that says I'm thinking of you? I'm sure your daughters look forward to seeing what the treat is each day.

    1. Hi Live and Learn,
you always say the nicest things. I appreciate that about you. And now I'll have to look up that song.
      Have a great day!

  3. Lili, you always have just the right touch to take a nice gift to one that is SO visually appealing. Love those ribbons. Though I provide some gifts to my family, they usually look pretty pedestrian! Maybe eventually some of your creativity will rub off on me!! Case in point...

I wanted to follow up from one of your previous posts. My husband and I are going with friends on a trip to Las Vegas in a few days. (First trip anywhere in over 2 years of course) I'm not a gambler, but we're going with 2 long time couple friends and the fellowship alone will be worth the trip. We're planning to see some shows and do some sightseeing. We will also be seeing our son and his fiancée on the way. I decided I'd make some sugar cookies to give them and some to take with the rest of us. I remembered the heart cookie cutter like the one from your valentine post and thought I'd use that to make some for our son with extras for the rest of us. Then, I decided to dig through all my cookie cutters to see if by chance I had the other shapes from the vintage bridge set-the club and spade to go with the heart and diamond. (My mother didn't remember having a full set, just the heart and diamond) Well, I found them! I decided that sugar cookies with red sugar in those shapes would be suggestive of cards in Las Vegas :) I also have a square cutter, so I cut some of those out, adding chocolate chips in the patterns of dice. Now I guarantee they won't be packaged as cute as Lili would make them, but hopefully they will taste good! We are coming back on St Patrick's Day, so I put green sugar on some of the clubs to approximate shamrocks! Covering all my bases!

Have a good rest of the week everyone! Lili, I'm so glad you are feeling better now.

    1. Super cute idea with the card cookies! I'm also not very good at packaging gifts to make them look pretty. I think I am missing the patience gene for that ;)! Enjoy your trip. It will be good to get away.
