Growing Things: Updates

Remember those "white" primroses I dug up and repotted so I could move them into large pots at the entry to our house? It turns out that not all of them are white. This one here is sporting a purple bud soon to open!

My week-old watercress sprouts (grown on a wet paper towel in a dish on a window sill) are coming along nicely. I removed the plastic bag and pushed the table closer to the window. Keeping the plastic bag now off means I'll have to remember to water the paper towel daily to keep these sprouts alive.

  1. I love seeing things grow! I have a geranium from last summer that I brought inside. It looks dead but it started growing some green leafy stuff during the winter and still has a little green leafy but most of the "old" stems are dead. I'm not sure what to do with it. I kind of want to see if it could grow again but not sure what to trim off. Should I let it go to die or is there life in there somewhere. I have a light on it during the day and I water it. Ideas anyone?

    1. I don't have much experience growing geraniums indoors. I do know that my grandmother propagated them easily by cutting a stem and rooting it in water.

    2. Hi Alice,
I like Live and Learn's idea to take a cutting and root it for a new plant. I overwintered some geraniums for a couple of years about a decade ago. They got a little leggy, but I was able to keep them alive and then put them outside in spring again. Good luck if you try to keep it going until spring!

  2. Primroses are so pretty. I'm sure the purple bloom will be a bright spot when it opens. From the picture, it looks like some of the sprouts are growing into the paper towel and might be hard to remove. Is that true or are the just on top?

    1. Hi Live and Learn,
Yes, the sprouts are rooting into the paper towel. that shouldn't be a problem if I can grow them to be bigger. Then I'll just cut the tiny plants off at the base, like how one cuts micro greens that are planted in pots of soil.

  3. How nice to see all the items growing. I bet that's a mood-booster for you, Lili.

We had crocuses blooming on the south side of our house earlier this week. I don't think they like the weather we are currently having. We were part of the winter storm but thankfully didn't get much ice. It snowed, and then we got freezing rain and sleet on top of the snow. Then it froze. My daughter and I chipped away at our driveway today. Kind of icky, but at least we have power!

Sorry, Alice, I'm the wrong one to ask about keeping plants alive.

    1. Hi Kris,
Lucky you to have in-bloom crocuses this early! Crocus are up in some sunnier yards around here, but only few have bloomed so far. Brrr, stay warm. Spring is just around the corner!
