Any Plans For Memorial Day Weekend?

Is Monday a day off for you? Will you do anything special for Memorial Day? As a homemaker, I work everyday, but I take it slower and easier on Sundays. I especially work on holidays. :) But doing things for friends and family is a labor of love.

As we've had a long string of cold wet weather, I will use this weekend as an opportunity to work in the garden. I still have some veggies, flowers and herbs to plant. So lots of garden work for me.

But there is something special that we'll do on Monday. Since this weekend is the unofficial beginning of summer, we usually go to the beach briefly on Memorial Day morning. We bring a breakfast, dress warmly, and walk along the water's edge. By the time we leave, families are beginning to arrive. It works out great. We have the beach mostly to ourselves, parking is a breeze, and we spend some time outdoors.

Later in the day, late afternoon, I'll get a fire in the fire ring going and we'll have a hot dog cookout -- hot dogs, potato salad, green salad, and a rhubarb gelatin salad. And that's about it for our Memorial Day.

How about you? What do you have planned for this weekend? Is this too early in your area to go to the beach? Or does summer unofficially begin in your area, too?

Wishing you a wonderful weekend. I'll be back on Monday afternoon.

  1. What a nice Memorial Day tradition. We are going to have a small cookout here on Monday. So far the menu is hamburgers and grilled zucchini. But before that, we have a family graduation party on Saturday that I'm making cookies and brownies for. Memorial Day usually signals the start of summer with pool and beach activities in my area, but the temps are in he 50s for the weekend, so I don't know how much water activity will be going on.

  2. I am very much looking forward to a quiet weekend. We've been doing a lot of driving in the past few weeks (getting kids moved, attending graduation), and while I was happy to do those things, I am looking forward to some down time. I bought flowers for my pots, and need to get those planted. My husband and I will likely do some hiking. I'm thinking about going canoeing at some point, so I guess that would be our water activity.

Your breakfast activity sounds like our Breakfast at the Beach morning. I think this year I will only have my daughter to do that with. Still fun, but I will miss having my son along.

My husband does the grilling. I get to take some time off from cooking and he gets to enjoy himself--win, win!

Our beaches are wide open here in the coastal Outer Banks of NC! People have been in the water all week and before. (Not me, I have to wait for the warmer water temps in July!) We are having a bit of actual spring this week with highs in the low 70s. Beautiful weather. Our tourists are here and starting this weekend, things begin to get very crowded and busy.

My DS and DIL invited us to visit them and the 2 year old, since they were here Easter, so that’s what we’re doing. I always like to take food with us as I well remember how difficult it was with a little one with both parents working. Plus, at first I thought we might have company so I already have items for a cookout. If they have other plans, I’ll stick the food in the freezer.

For tomorrow night, I’m taking a marinated pork loin. I just finished a batch of potato salad that we will eat Saturday and Sunday. Then I have zucchini/onions and pineapple for sides for Saturday. I made sugar cookies with red, white and blue sugars for dessert.

We may be coming home Monday so we will cook out Sunday. I have planned chicken burgers (plus cheese, lettuce etc) with the potato salad, deviled eggs, cukes, strawberries and cookies.

If we stay through Monday we will eat leftovers. I’m not sure my meals are hitting the 7 groups;) but they generally fit into my dietary mantra of “milk, meat, vegetable, fruit and starch”!

  4. I love your beach tradition. Not much special here...just looking forward to a slow day where I can weed (weather in PA should be cooler in the 60s and nice) and the kids will no doubt set up the badminton set and we'll also eat hotdogs we roast in our fire pit. I like slow days and am looking forward to it! Hope yours is lovely!
