Welcome Signs of Spring: Blossoms Around the Property, and What I Cut for Indoors Even in February

I know it's still very wintry in other parts of the country. However, I wanted to provide some encouraging photos -- winter will eventually end. Here's what I found in our yard and on our deck.

The native plum is beginning to blossom. It does fruit, a little.
But the plums are small and best for jam or leaving for the squirrels.

Here's a pot I showed last March.
The primroses stopped blooming in the heat of summer
but returned in late fall.
The grape hyacinth next to the birdie's head, bloomed in spring,
dried up, then put on growth in fall to bloom this month.

I have two pots of petite daffodils that are
the earliest of my spring bulbs to bloom.
As they're on the deck, they bloomed earlier than those in the ground.

The forsythia is just about to bloom.
In about 4 weeks or so the bush will be fully yellow.
But I did find a few blossoms this week.

In February I like to bring some forsythia cuttings indoors.
Right now they look like bare branches.
In about a week to 10 days the cuttings will provide an indoor show.

For cuttings, I look for branches that have
just a touch of yellow in one or two buds per branch.

Winter can't last forever. My hope for you is that your spring will come sooner rather than later and will bring lots of cheerful blossoms.

  1. Your flowers are so pretty. We are behind you in spring weather, but it is coming. I have a few leaves poking their heads above the ground. Of course, there will be many freezing days yet to come that may burn them a bit, but they usually come back just fine.

  2. We've been teased with spring last week but we learn never to think winter is over in February because we can have winter for a while yet as proven this week with more snow to shovel. It will be warm today but reality is to not think winter is over even though it's almost March as the temps will drop in the next few days. We enjoy the tease of spring but the real one will come later. And no blossoms yet here.

  3. Today was 57° here in suburbs of Philadelphia near Allentown. Nothing is poking it's head up in my flower beds but our 12!plus inches of snow has only just melted or is melting. I took a long walk today; so very grateful for a bit of Spring weather and brings bright hope for a weary soul tired of winter!

  4. We hit the 100 inch mark for snow this season this past week, and it's snowing now, but we had a tease of spring last week. I had 2 crocuses blooming on the south side of the house. Welcome sight!
