Strange Things Happen When You Have Limited Internet

About 2 weeks ago my laptop decided it didn’t want to recharge. I tried new cables, different outlets, and various keyboard sequences trying to get it to charge. It’s an older laptop, so it wouldn’t make financial sense to have parts replaced.

So what did I do? I ordered a new one. My situation is this, because it is back-to-school time, laptops are backordered. For the time being, I’m using my 10-year old phone (which also has issues) to do what I need online.

Blogging mostly works, with a few challenges. But other than writing my blog, checking email (I’m desperate to see my new laptop get an update on arrival date), and playing solitaire, I really can’t do much on my phone online.

There have been a series of surprising outcomes to not going online much. Here’s the list:

  • I go to bed a lot earlier!
  • I am dressed and ready for the day a lot earlier.
  • I run errands as soon as the store or business I need is open.
  • I have time to do all those things I told myself I was too busy to do in summer, for example—
  • Thoroughly cleaning the primary bathroom
  • Dusting the public spaces of the house
  • Sanding off the paint on the deck stair risers (I finished them today while my husband was at work)
  • Sorting through and organizing the back-up pantry
  • Baking — bread, bran muffins with the newly discovered bran, cinnamon rolls — and this is all in the last week.
  • Organizing the cabinet in the primary bathroom (I was able to make that little room so tidy and neat).
  • Inventory of the garage fridge
  • Working on a fall-inspired project
  • And so much more.
I know I don’t spend that much time online. However, not having full access to the internet has made me quite a lot more productive. Strange? Maybe not so strange.

Have you ever experienced a flurry of work when you haven’t had access to the internet?Did it surprise you how much you got done?

With the loan of my husband’s laptop over the weekend, I was able to get the next edition of the newsletter completed.

That brings me to this — if you are a subscriber, check your email Tuesday morning for the September 1 newsletter from me. If you would like to become a subscriber, fill out the form in the sidebar. Once you’ve confirmed your email, I’ll make sure you receive the latest issue.

Until tomorrow . . .

  1. I don't know how you are able to write your blog on your phone. I've never tried, but I know typing texts is hard enough for me. I don't spend as much time online as some, but more than I want. I'm sure I'd be more productive-- If I didn't substitute the time with a book. :)

  2. Blogging from a phone sounds awful to me. Hopefully you will be up and running with your new laptop soon. And yes, I suspect that I spend more time than I really should online.

  3. Lili, I got your newsletter this morning. It has a different feel than the blog and I encourage others to give it a try.
