Easy-Peasy Donuts for Father's Day

I saw this really cool ring that you can make with a silver quarter. Even if you have no interest in making one of these rings, you should check this out. I just thought it was really cool and would make a great Dad gift.

Make a silver ring for 25 cents

Now, for the rest of us (who probably won't be making a ring for their men) we need some realistic ideas for Father's Day. I'll tell you one of mine. For Father's Day, I'll be making my Easy-Peasy Donuts for Father's Day breakfast.

This recipe has been around for at least 30 years. Friends and I made these while in college (30 odd years ago). It always surprises me that some people haven't heard of them. They are easy, inexpensive, and quick to make. I bet Dad would love these this Father's Day.

Easy-Peasy Donuts

you'll need:
1 can of biscuit dough (the whack 'em on the counter type -- the Walmart near us sells them for 50 cents a can)
a small to medium saucepan
some vegetable oil for frying (peanut or canola oil are good choices), enough to fill the saucepan about 2 inches deep
some toppings for the cooked donuts -- frosting & sprinkles, cinnamon & sugar, or powdered sugar

Pour enough oil into the saucepan to fill 2 inches deep. Heat over Medium flame. Meanwhile, get your draining area set up. I use a cookie rack topped with one of the following: two unfolded paper napkins, two paper towels, or a brown paper bag.

Open your can of dough. Form into donuts 1 at a time, as you are frying them. To form, poke a hole in the center of each biscuit, and with your thumb, stretch the hole just a bit.

Use a slotted spoon or metal spatula to drop dough into hot oil. The oil should be about 375 degrees F. If you don't have a thermometer to test, you can do the bread cube test. Drop a 1-inch cube of fresh bread into the oil. It should brown in 60 seconds. If it browns too quickly, your oil is too hot, turn down the stove. If it browns too slowly, your oil needs more time to heat. You probably don't need to adjust the burner setting, just give it a few additional heating minutes.

When the underside of the donut looks brown, turn over with the slotted spoon or spatula. Cook until this side is also brown. Remove to a paper towel-covered rack to drain. When all are done, either frost, dip in cinnamon & sugar mixture, or dip in powdered sugar.

What to do with leftover oil
I store mine covered, in the fridge, and try to use it up when sautéing other foods, mixing this once-used oil, half and half, with new oil.

  1. Oh those sound yummy! Father's day for my husband, one of his favorite movie's on blu ray, dances with wolves. AND a gift card to Red Robin, that way we can have burger's and he won't have to cook!

    1. What great Father's Day ideas! Your husband is going to have an awesome day. I love the scenery in Dances with Wolves. And very nice of you to make sure he doesn't have to do the grilling on his day --with the Red Robin card! Thanks for commenting!
