Okay, so the kids went back to school on Wednesday and I took one look around the house and thought "who let the monkeys out of the cage?" All summer long we'd been letting housework slide. It's my fault as much as any one else's. I just did not keep on top of everyone, to put their things away.
We still have a sandy bucket on the kitchen floor from a trip to the beach two weeks ago. A sewing mess persists in the dining room, both of my daughter's and of my own making. The family room, though, is not too bad, a bit dusty perhaps. Laundry room needs a good cleaning and dusting. (Who knew that laundry rooms could get dusty?) Everywhere I turn, there is evidence of a fun-filled summer. And that in itself is a very good thing. But summer is over, and now. . .
It's time to take back the house!
Goal for the week:
Put the extra stuff away
For the next few weeks, I plan on doing just that, taking back the house, one small task at a time. This week, it's simply getting all the extra stuff put where it belongs. (And finding specific storage places for each item as I go. I'll need to come up with some storage solutions this week.)
I'm not much of a housekeeper (did I mention that before?). So staying on top of these things is foreign to me. I always need some sort of plan or organization to just stay afloat. Each week, for the next month, I'll give myself a specific task. And hopefully, by early October, I'll be able to look around and see an orderly house once again.

At my house, it's more like, who let the snowstorm in? My kids love to create all sorts of things out of paper. The tag ends get everywhere and sometimes, yes, it looks like a major snowfall. I have them pick up the big chunks and get the rest with the vacuum ... but it's an ongoing process!
ReplyDeleteIt's that time of year when you start thinking about all the things that need to be done before winter sets in--getting the furnace and fireplace checked, washing the windows, de-rusting the patio furniture and spray-painting it--along with de-cluttering tasks that are easier to do without children around. I don't mind my regular housekeeping chores but tend to feel overwhelmed with the extras.

DeleteA snowstorm in early September. I can imagine it. But at least making things out of paper is creative and inexpensive. I bet your kids are quite creative!
Oh I know, all those extra things to be done, and time is swiftly passing. I really need to get outside and clean the windows. You're right about decluttering being much easier when kids are at school. In fact I prefer to have the whole house to myself, when sorting and organizing stuff. Otherwise I become too distracted.

So cleaning your windows is a regular Fall chore? Who knew? My method is that when I get annoyed when I look out them, it's time.

DeleteThe reason it's a fall chore here is 1) the angle of the sun in fall and winter hits the windows (on the south side of the house) in such a way that all the dirt and water spots are highly visible, and 2) kids, hubby and I have been coming and going all summer long, leaving hand prints on the windows. We touch the windows more in summer, less in winter.
So I wait for a cloudy day and get all the south side windows washed. And actually we seem to have windows that get water spots on them easily (maybe the overhang is not very deep on the eaves), so I wind up cleaning them in late winter and mid spring, too. Never ending chore.
Hope that clears up the "why".
