Flowers from the garden on my birthday

I believe that if I don't do nice things for my own enjoyment, then I have no right to complain when no one else does them for me. My grandmother was fond of bringing flowers in from the garden. She would say, "we need to feed ourselves with the beauty around us. If we don't, the beauty that is inside of us will wither and die."

One of the nice little things that I like to do for myself on my birthday, is cut flowers for the house. The selection is different every year, as spring unfolds differently each year.

This year, I found grape hyacinths,

violets,

camellias,

and cherry blossoms.

Feeding my spirit with the beauty from the gardens.

  1. Beautiful flowers.

All we have found so far are four crocuses (not to be picked, too precious still!)) and some branches of pussy willow, so we brought them in. My daughter will hang easter ornaments on them.

    Happy birthday!

    1. Hi Jessica,
That's how I feel about the tulips. We do have tulips in the garden, but cutting them would reduce my ability to appreciate them by about 10 days. Hopefully, the weather will warm shortly, for you, and your garden will have flowers in abundance! Easter branches sound very nice.

  2. Loads of grape hyacinth in our garden so I might do the same on my birthday, but none of the other things...our little cherry is just thinking about blooming :-)

    1. Hi Sarah,
Loads of grape hyacinth could make a really lovely display, lots of little cups, all lined up, and filled with the tiny purple blossoms.
      Have a wonderful birthday!

  3. Thank you for sharing photos of your birthday flowers. Waking up to another white outdoors, and its still snowing, it is a lovely reminder that spring may actually appear sometime soon.

    1. Hi Jayne,
well, white is a pretty color too. At least there's no weeding to do at your place! I know that so many people had snow yesterday and this morning. But surely, the snow must be about done for the year!
Wishing you spring blooms very soon!

  4. I think that you make a very good point that if you don't treat yourself well, you can't expect others to do it. I also think that you are modeling good behavior for your children. We don't want them all to grow up to by martyrs which is an easy thing to be sometimes--especially for whoever is running the household.

    1. Hi live and learn,
I think it makes me a happier person to be around, if I do some nice things for myself. And if I can do those things for free, all the better! But, yes, definitely, all of my kids need to see that moms have to take care of themselves, my daughters so that they'll do nice things for themselves someday, and my son, so he'll understand when his wife needs time to do things which mostly bring her joy. Men need to do good things for themselves, too. But I think the martyr syndrome is more of a woman-thing.

  5. I don't think we get camellias around here. So pretty!

I like your grandmother's quote. I agree, sometimes we need to take time for ourselves to do things which add "gas to our tanks", so to speak, and it IS a good example for our kids! Hope you had a great b-day.

    1. Hi Kris,
Yeah, I think we all need to find that thing, or things, that recharge us. Otherwise, we're just running on fumes. Sometimes its favorite music. Sometimes a book or a few minutes for a magazine. Sometimes a walk in the neighborhood does it for me. Whichever it is, I think we need these special moments as much as food or air.

My birthday was great. And I had cake for breakfast today. Is that horrible?

    2. Yes, you are a horrible, terrible, no good, very bad person for having cake for breakfast. But who cares? It was your birthday! :)

    3. I guess it depends what else I had for breakfast, cuz really, cake could be part of a healthy breakfast -- eggs, milk, wheat, all healthy ingredients!
