Finding the free stuff

My rosemary plants died on me this past season. Sigh. I've now started a couple of new plants from seed, but they won't be near ready for harvest for a year or two.

In the meantime, I've been wanting some rosemary for both flavored vinegar and for drying to use in cooking.

This past Saturday, at the event I worked at our church, we picked a bunch of fresh herbs from the kitchen garden, just outside the church's kitchen door. The ladies have planted this really lovely herb garden with thyme, rosemary, mint, chives, lavender and parsley. Those of us who work in the kitchen regularly, come and go through this back door. I always run my fingers through the rosemary, to sniff it's wonderful aroma.

Well, there were more herbs clipped than actually needed on Saturday. No one else there had any interest in claiming these wonderfully fragrant stems. But I sure did!

I stuffed a bunch of the rosemary into my bottle of thyme vinegar, and have the other stems drying on the kitchen counter, to grind and use this winter.

And, I now know where I can find free rosemary while I wait for my new plants to grow!

    1. Hi Kris,
yum, rosemary-lemon chicken is one of my favorite ways to prepare chicken. I have a chicken waiting to be roasted this afternoon -- I think I'll do it with lemon, rosemary and garlic today! And rosemary smells so wonderful when it's cooking!

    1. Hi Jayne,
I don't know why it surprises me, I should have learned by now, but practically no one else ever seems to feel the same about food waste as I do. I was very glad to have those herbs for my use!

  3. Good score! I LOVE fresh rosemary, but unfortunately the plants can't survive our winters here. I've been thinking of trying to grow it as an annual, but I might have to buy a new plant at the nursery each year. Some people grow it inside, but my cats would destroy it. Maybe I should build a greenhouse just for the sake of rosemary... it would almost be worth it! :-)

    1. Hi Cat,
You may be right on rosemary being grown as an annual in your area. If you had it in a pot, could CatMan keep it at his place in winter for you?
I love fresh rosemary, too. One of my favorite herbs ever!

  4. Awesome! It is always wonderful when the universe fills a need you didn't even have to voice and when it is a want (as opposed to a need) it is just as sweet.

  5. Smart move! 2 Saturday's I hosted a family reunion. One of my cousins brought a vase filled with fresh herbs and flowers to use on the tables. After the party I brought them home and was enjoying how beautiful and fragrant they were until I roasted a turkey. I removed all the flowers, rinsed the herbs and shoved them into the turkey cavity. It might be the best turkey I have ever cooked plus no additional cost for seasonings.

  6. How neat that you were there to reap the rewards! I love to smell fresh herbs. When I was growing up, I used to mow my neighbor's lawn and part of it was a patch of mint and when I mowed the edge of it the whole yard smell of mint. It was divine. :)

  7. Our church has an herb garden also, but it doesn't sound like that it is doing as well as yours. Glad you got the wonderful smelling rosemary for your efforts that day.

    1. HI live and learn,
Someone must be taking care of our herb garden, as it always looks so tidy and weeded. Hmmm, I'll have to ask who looks after it.
