Blogging issues

So, over the past week, I've put many, many hours into trying to solve my feed issues with this blog. This is time that I could have put towards active frugality and/or sleep. There appears to be some sort of error in my feed delivery, which I am unable to correct. So, I'm stuck. I don't have any more time to devote to solving this issue. And my personal knowledge of all of this is limited.

I'm just going to leave this as it is. If you want to continue visiting my blog, that's great. I can tell you about when my blog will post most weekdays. But your feed reader will likely not update with my blog, indefinitely. As far as I can tell, the email delivery still works.

Email is delivered between 5 and 6 AM Pacific time. I publish my posts by about 4:30 AM Pacific time.

If in the future I have a burst of energy or a person willing to help me on this issue, then maybe my feed delivery issues can be resolved.

We're all very busy people, myself included. It doesn't make sense for me to strip away time that could be spent in my volunteer capacity, taking care of a home and family, and paid employment, to try and fix whatever is wrong with the feed delivery for this blog. For the time being, I will continue to post about the various ways that I maximize our modest income.

I understand that without feed delivery, my readership will continue to dwindle. Sometimes, I just have to wonder, is this God's way of pushing me in another direction? It could very well be. Until I have His answer, I'll keep posting. Until tomorrow,
God bless.

  1. What is this "feed" thing anyway. I just check back here every day or two and enjoy every post. THank you for sharing your ideas.

    1. Hi Jess,
You can subscribe to have various blog posts delivered to a feed reader, to save you the trouble of checking to see if a blog has any new content. The feed is supposed to update immediately, so on your reader (or for a blog dashboard) you would see that something was new by an author. You get at least a partial snippet of the post, so you can see if you want to click through. Some blogs allow the entire post to be published, so you wouldn't need to click through, but could just read a bunch of blogs daily with less trouble.

So, my problem is somewhere between publishing a post, and delivery to various different feed systems, something gets fouled up and posts are either delayed by several days, or lost altogether. Delivery to the email set-up is all one feed system, so no transferring of content between one system and another. A variety of things can go wrong, apparently. Some of the stuff that we don't ever think about, like the HTML, and items like anchorimage attributes, the stuff that we don't see when reading someone's blog, can jam up another feed system and back everything up for one particular blog.

Anyway, I'll still publish posts, and they'll still be at this address, it's just folks using a feed reader will continue to have problems getting new posts.
      Thanks for your kind words!

  2. Be encouraged in knowing that I have email deliveries, and even if the emails stop today....I will visit this blog. You are on my favorites list...right up at the top with The Prudent Homemaker!! I appreciate the ways that you put yourself out there, and show us ways to save. I appreciate your hard work, and break down of your cost. So with this said, I hope that you have a great Memorial Day weekend, and we here at bloggyland thank you so much!! Lona

I am glad to know that email is still working, and thank ou for the kind words!

I hope your Memorial Day weekend is wonderful as well. Any big plans? I hope to get a lot of gardening done. And the chive blossoms are ready to make into chive blossom vinegar. I have 2 friends who have never made this and I've invited them over to do so this weekend. They loved making rosemary vinegar with me a couple of years ago.

    2. No, big plans, so to speak! But my 7 year old son and I will go yard saleing!! Yippeee!!! We love going to yard sales! The last time we went a couple of weeks ago, he found a baseball helmet for 5 dollars, regular retail of about 40 dollars!! Hope that you have fun with your friends!! I would love some suggestions for some raspberries. We have never had them fresh, and a friend loaded us with 12 pints!! Lona

    3. Oh wow! 12 pints sounds wonderful! Raspberry jam is one of my favorite things to do with raspberries. Then you have that raspberry flavor, long after the season is over. Melted raspberry jam makes a pretty "sauce" over pear and each slices, for a light dessert.

Or, raspberry sorbet, very easy to make if you have a hand-crank ice cream maker (like the Donvier).

But also, just fresh, especially topping a chocolate cake. I love the flavors of raspberry and chocolate combined. Raspberries go well with fresh peaches, either in a fruit salad, or baked together in a cobbler I think. I like the color combination as well as the flavor. And raspberry lemonade is pretty and very easy. Put a large handful of the most ripe, even overripe, raspberries in a blender, along with some of lemonade (a couple of cups). Blend, then pour through a sieve to strain out seeds. Add more lemonade to make about 2 quarts. Adjust sweetening, if desired.
And raspberry vinegar is nice to make a rosy vinaigrette salad dressing. Here's the proportions and directions I use for both raspberry and blackberry vinegars:

Have fun yard saling with your son!

    4. Thank you so much for the ideas! Jam would be wonderful!! My friend also gifted me with about 20 bundt cakes. I gave 10 to my Wednesday night youth group at church. The rest are in the freezer. The night I received the gift, I threw a handful of raspberries, a sprinkle of sugar and a dash of salt and heated it for about 5 minutes. My daughter and I poured that over a slice of the bundt cake!! Delicious!! I will surely make a chocolate cake to use with the raspberries, sounds like a great excuse for chocolate cake...tehehe!!

    5. Bundt cakes, too! Your church youth group surely enjoyed those! And you and your family will, as well, for some time now!

    1. Hi Teresa,
Oh, trying to do any sort of writing on an ipad has been a struggle for me! And I have heard from another friend that she can't use her ipad to comment on blogs. So, you're not alone with that problem.

It is so nice to find others who are making similar choices. It can feel lonely in the world to think that you're the only one in your circle who is doing what seems like oddball things, like ordering bathroom tissue from Staples, or buying 50 lbs of dried beans at a time, or buying not just the usual 1 turkey at Thanksgiving, but several.I have people in my circle that I just don't even mention most of what I do, because they just don't get it. So, having this outlet to share what we are doing is beneficial for all of us, I think!

      Thanks for reading!

  6. Well, I come to the blog most days to read. The only issue I've had personally is that, every time I comment (for just the past few weeks), I get an email saying it is undeliverable, even though my comment posts. Kinda weird, but doesn't affect my reading. :)

    1. Hi Cat,
You know, sometimes I can't reply to comments. I recently switched my browser to Chrome (from Safari) and have had far fewer problems with comments since.

Do you see your comments on my blog, but just get a weird message about being undeliverable? About a week ago, I don't remember whose comment it was, but someone's comment published to the blog, but I didn't get an email for it. I usually get emails from all the comments. I checked the trash and spam to see if the email version of the comment had gone to either of those places, but nothing. I just chalked it up to a weird moment in email-land.

So, I'm thinking, maybe your comments post, but just don't get sent to my email, like gmail backfires momentarily and it's returned to you as undeliverable.

Anyway, thanks so much for reading and commenting!

  7. If it helps I've still been seeing new posts in my feed. It just shows a few line and then cuts off. Not a problem to click on over to the blog to finish reading the post. I hope you keep blogging!

    1. HI Christa,
what you're currently experiencing is the result of one of the supposed fixes, to use only partial posts in the feeds. This eliminated a bunch of things like imageanchor attributes (I had to ask my son what on Earth those were), which were encoded at the end of posts, from feeds, and helped my feeds show up in some readers. I've reached the point where I'm no longer sure what I've done, and where with this blogs publishing and feeds. But, I have learned a whole lot about the kind of stuff most of us never think about with computers.

Thank you for your support! It means a lot to me!

  8. Good morning Lili, from NC. I'm like Jess..I don't subscribe to the feed..I just check daily Mon-Fri to see if you've posted here and/or on your facebook page. I too so enjoy your tips, your calculations;) (I'm a numbers nerd too:) and all of your excellent information. I've learned a lot from you. I can well understand, however, the frustration these technical snafus cause you and the time it has stolen from other things dear to you.. But I-like others-would miss you if you were gone..

    1. Hi Anna,
That's been one of the confusing things, is why does my blog do okay on one feed system work, but not another? I am glad, though, that it is working for you! And thank you for your support, I appreciate it immensely!

  10. Another numbers nerd here too lol. In reading your bio...that's what caught my attention, that you did your taxes long hand (like I did since the seventies until just recently), and you loved art like I do. What an odd combination I have known privately about myself, and to find another person out there in blogland whose journey is similar to our family's in the season of life we are in (thanks Teresa!), that told me your blog is the one to read.

I think your blog goes beyond the obvious frugal discussion that is so common with other frugal type blogs and is true "creative savv." It is not just the bits and pieces of frugal tips that make your blog special, but it is your mental framework that hangs the bits and pieces, or "creative savv", that is unique. Of course, the dollars saved from frugal hard work, inspired by reading your blog speaks for itself... another $300+ food spend this month for our family!!

    1. Hi YHF,
Interesting how many of us like the numbers aspect of frugality.

Oh, big congratulations on another good spending month for groceries at your house! It's a real struggle with resent food-cost inflation. I've been really feeling the pinch this past winter and now spring.

Thank you for all of your helpful comments and support!

  11. Add me to the list of people who don't subscribe to the feed. It only takes me a few seconds to check in and see if you have new content. I will continue to read your blog for as long as you decide to post on it ... sometimes we are led in a different direction and I selfishly hope you aren't going to stop blogging, but if you do, I know you will have put a lot of thought and prayer into your decision.

I also agree with you that your time is better spent in areas of true value to you--good for you for making that decision.

    1. Hi Kris,
Well, now here I was sooo overly worried about my feed issues, and as it turns out, many of you just check in without using a feed subscription. Maybe God just doesn't want me worry about technical stuff, but just continue on with sharing and receiving input on how we all live our lives. I can see, though, that God was not intending for me to become a software engineer!

Thank you, Kris, for all of your kind words and understanding!

    1. Hi Nancy,
I'm so glad that checking to see if anything is there isn't a problem. Maybe my feed will just correct itself -- we have a long-standing joke in our family about all of the appliances that seem to self-repair.

Thank you, so much, for reading. I truly appreciate it!

  14. I do subscribe to a feed, and the results from your blog are irregular so I usually just check your site. One week, none of the posts showed up from your blog even when I went directly to your site. That seems better now.

As you've said, you've spent enough time trying to fix your blog. Temporarily, you may lose a few people, but they will find you again in other ways. Your blog content is useful to many and they will look for you. Good luck.
