Have you noticed?

The days are getting much shorter. And the sun is going behind the tress much earlier.

This always makes me feel to be in a rush. As if we were suddenly going to get fewer hours in each 24-hour period.

Maybe I'm in a rush to get in all that last bit of summer fun.

It seems like just a couple of weeks ago that summer still stretched way out in front of us. And now, in the stores, I see parents buying the school year's supplies. I see teachers buying their classroom accessories and decorations.

And it had seemed like there was lots of time for veggies to continue growing and setting more of their crops. But now, I'm wondering if we'll get much of some produce, if any at all.

So much just didn't get done this summer.

Oh well, there's always summer 2016.

Good thing I baked myself a cake, yesterday, to cheer me up! Cake is such a cheery food. And licking the bowl isn't bad, either! ;-)

Hi, Lili--

what a lovely photo to start your readers' day! :)

I do notice that the days seem to be getting shorter, as well as the time left in summer. I always enjoy the change of pace that the changing of each season brings; but like you, this year there seems to be so much I want/need to do, and so much to savor, that it leaves more of a little niggling feeling in the back of my mind than usual.

In these situations, I just try to remember to focus on being "present" in the current moment, while still planning/prepping for the future. I don't want to get so wrapped-up in what's left to do/next to come that I "miss" what's happening right now. Don't you think that's one of the keys to happiness? :)

Enjoy your last days and weeks of summer. We have our whole family together for another couple of days, so it's heaven to me!

Have a great day! Sara

And we had cake this week, too, for two family birthdays we celebrate together. Cake definitely cheers everyone! :) Sara

I've been feeling the same wistfulness of the shortening days but I am looking forward to some cooler weather.

Lovely picture of your backyard:) your deck looks inviting to sit and enjoy coffee on.

Hi Sara,
I'm trying very hard, these days, to not future-trip, and just live in the present. This is not an easy thing for me to do. But you're right, we should just enjoy what we have in the here and now.

And on that note -- enjoy your time with your whole family there. I know having your sons home for a bit is a treasured time for you!!

Hi Alice,
I would send a piece of cake, if I could! I'll send hugs, instead-- (((Alice)))

Wishing you a great day!

Hi live and learn,
oh yes, I'll take some cooler nights! Now that is something to anticipate with glee!

Hi Teresa,
You're right, it is a peasant place to sit and enjoy coffee or tea on. I'll make sure I do that often enough in the coming weeks, to tide me over till spring. I hope you're enjoying these last weeks of summer!

The deck looks so peaceful and inviting! Yes, days are shorter, leaves changing color, some falling.

I know exactly that feeling of shortening days since we lived in Portland for a few years. Late summers were so beautiful, long days of sunshine enjoyed well into the evening. Losing over six hours of sunshine as the days shorten (and you rarely get that much sunshine the rest of the year) is such a depressing anxiety feeling to face every year same time same place...enjoy your lovely outdoor space and have a wonderful weekend!!

Lovely deck so inviting. I love summer but am looking forward to cooler weather.
My aunt lives in Oregon and really misses the sun sometimes she comes to Southern Cali n the winter. She also painted a room a nice bright color and bought a special light for when she is missing the sun. I am taking time to enjoy the beauty outside today thank you for the reminder.

Hi Lili,
I agree with you - especially the "so much just didn't get done this summer" part. But I am trying to be grateful for what DID get done, and looking forward to a better 2016. And, like Sara, I am trying to live in the present moment!

Yes, noticing that here as well. And the beginning of school for the kids and the associated activities we are delving into this year seems to magnify that. It is bringing an urgency to my need to plan and organize my hours to fit things in while also allowing time for what feeds my soul (long hikes).

That cake looks delicious!

Hi Carol,
I've been seeing some leaves falling, here, too. I think ours are the dried out leaves from the very dry summer we've had. But it is looking much more fall-like. I got out a few fall home decorations the other day. It was nice to *not* have the sun coming up at 5 AM this morning, so I could sleep later.

Oh, yes, the long days of summer are wonderful here. Being able to be outside and do things, take walks in the evening, and still have it light. But the super short days of winter are hard to deal with for me (grew up in So. Calif).

Enjoy your weekend, too!

Thank you, Ruthie! Have a great weekend, yourself!

Hi Patti,
I chose pale yellow kitchen cabinets to help cheer the kitchen (previously had been dark wood), and I have a "happy lamp", too. Most folks take their big vacations in summer. We figure, why go someplace else when the weather is so beautiful here, in summer. But winter is when we're needing to get a bit of sunshine. So, I do a winter vacation every year. It helps with my SAD.

But for now, just enjoying the lovely late summer days. Enjoy the weekend, Patti!

I am trying to make myself ready, Cat! Acceptance is the first step. The days are getting shorter. Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Jo Ann,
I should make a list of what I actually did get done, or how I used my time this summer. That might make me feel a bit better about the stuff that never was done. Thanks for that perspective!

Enjoy the weekend!

Thank you, Belinda!

Hi Cat,
oh that sounds lovely, the long hikes. I think taking time to do things just because it nurtures yourself is especially important when you have so much else going on.

Lili, your deck is beautiful!
This time of summer is always a bit bittersweet for me. I just hate to think what is coming, I really enjoy the fall but I am not at all a winter person & before we know it we will be shoveling snow.

Autumn is my absolute favourite season. Bring it on!!!

Lili said...

Hi Rhonda,
Thank you. We enjoy it.
I know what you mean, I am trying to NOT think about the negative thing of winter. For us, not so much shoveling snow as endless days of gray and rain. Time to plan my mid-winter escape!

Lili said...

Hi Theresa,
Autumn is beautiful! And the weather is good for hiking, fewer bugs, and it just feels peaceful and calm. I can see why you'd say it was your favorite!
