Thrifty summer fun with my girls

One bottle of nail polish, 3 pairs of feet, some open-toed shoes, a bit of "girl talk",

and one afternoon of fun.

  1. Hi Lili,

We had a really nice fun night with our family last night but it wasn't thrifty! It was my youngest daughter's birthday yesterday and my son's on July 25. We did some fun things on this birthday but yesterday hubs decided we should go out for dinner. Hmm, this costs money. He had a little stash hidden away and so I emailed all the kids early in the day to say "fun activity tonight, you might get wet but not enough for a bathing suit and towel, casual clothes are ok but so are dress-up". That was all I told them since I didn't want it to be without an element of surprise. All kids are adults--age 22, 21, and now 19. The part of getting wet didn't make sense as we sat in the restaurant so I flicked water at them from was glass of water to satisfy that element! They got a kick out of the night out since we just don't do that very often at all. We only had dinner with no dessert and no alcohol but when they got home the offer was open to ice cream (from that one and only gallon I bought last week) and then we all split beer and wine coolers. I'd rather have my kids drink responsibly in the comfort of my home than go out and drive home under the influence. We had great conversation and a wonderful impromptu birthday party!

    1. Hi Alice,
You know, even though we don't eat out in restaurants much, we do always set aside enough for a dinner out for our kid's birthdays. It's something we choose to celebrate with a dinner out. I'm really glad your husband had this money stashed away, and it could be used for something fun. There are so many non-fun bills to be paid that every once in a while a splurge like a birthday dinner out is memorable and special. And even more fun when it's a surprise!
      Happy birthday to your kids!

  2. Pedicures at home are the best! Twice a year the church I'm a member of has the church meetings broadcast on TV. During that time I offer anyone in the family a pedicure. It's good bonding time and I get my kids to listen!

    1. Hi Ruthie,
What a great way to gather your kids for something important to you (and them), but also for a nice, and free, treat of a pedicure!

    1. Hi YHF,
My own mom did a lot of fun things for/with, and spent many hours just being with my sister and me. It made an impact, and I treasure those memories. So I try to spend a good amount of time with all three of my kids. Its a little harder with my son, now that he has his own life, but we've had some good times together. We took a week-long vacation together, just he and I, when he was younger. Good memories!

My daughters have asked me if when they are older and they have families of their own, will we, 3 still take all girls trips? Our "girl time" may be shorter, but I think even then, we'll try to work in some time, just the 3 of us.

  5. Nice job on the pedicure.

There just aren't as many mother/son bonding activities are there are with daughters. However, the best times I have with my sons are doing walks/hikes.

    1. Hi live and learn,
I think you have to find your moments, with sons. You're right, not as many quick activities, like pedicures. But my son really enjoys museums of any sort, and we've taken a trip together, just he and I (we went to San Francisco one spring break and had a great time).

That's great that you and your sons enjoy hiking together. A lot of talking transpires while hiking ;-) I used to watch for moments when I had one of my kids "captive" and could just talk and hear what was going on in their minds.

  6. I've had quality time with both my children individually recently. I let both lead the way with what we would do - my son's favourite stuff to do was activity based - walking, cycling and swimming. My daughter's - visiting Bath and window shopping and buying 2 DVDs on special offer that we then watched when we got home, after taking it in turns to have a luxurious bath - the same bath and bathbomb obviously coz we're frugal (I went second but managed to top it up with hot water!) Your nails look great :-)

    1. Hi Sarah,
It looked like a lot of fun, the day that you let your son choose a boating activity. It sounds like you and your daughter also had a very fun day together. It's nice to have that one-on-one time with kids.
