Look what was in the free pile at Kohl's!

Okay, just a joke. No real "free" pile outside the doors at Kohl's. but you know how many garage sales have free piles? I was joking with my daughters about the free pile at Kohl's last week.

I had a $10 coupon in my stack of mail waiting for me when I returned from my trip. Luckily for me, it hadn't expired.

So off I went to Kohl's, coupon in hand. And going into the store I looked down and spied 2 pennies on the floor. Of course, I stooped to pick those 2 cents up. You never know when you're going to need 2 more cents, right?!

I wandered the home section of the store, looking for good deals. There are these knobs/hooks that I like. I picked up one of them a few months ago, on sale and with a $10 off coupon. But I knew I wanted another to make a pair of hooks on the wall. And this must be lucky day, as they were on sale, again!

I picked up one, price-checked it on the price checker machine, and found I needed to spend about another dollar to use the full $10 off coupon. In checking all of the clearance items, I found a bath bomb for 60 cents. This will make a great gift. Then I found a couple of gift bags, one for Mother's day and another for Christmas. Double great!

So i took my purchases to the cash register. After the gal rang them up, the total came to . . . you guessed it! 2 cents! I reached into my pocket and pulled out those 2 pennies. In and out the door with no money spent. The Kohl's free pile.

  2. Oh, that is so neat! I love the knob hook! In what room are you going to use the pair of hooks?

Hope you have a wonderful day!

    1. Hi Angie,
I'm not sure. They could go in the bedroom (I love hooks for things like pjs, robes, jeans, fleece jackets), or the bathroom. Or they would also look good in the hall down to the garage door, for coats and jackets there. Still thinking.

Have a wonderful day, yourself, Angie! (When someone wishes me a good day, I say to myself, "yes, I will have a good day today! So thank you!!)

  4. Great finds, Lili--How fun! I get $10 off JCPenney coupons and have a lot of fun doing the same thing. Since I usually don't "need" anything, I see what I can get for free, or next to free. I have bought clothing, household items, and gifts, all for a dollar or two with those wonderful coupons. When we do need something, such as jeans for my husband who mainly wears Levi 501s, the $10 off their sale price is very nice as well.
I have to tell you about a fun thrifting trip I had with a couple of my siblings last week. One of our Goodwills had Target salvage merchandise--new clothing for 99 cents, and miscellaneous small items 4/99 cents! What fun that was digging through these bins of items. One niece of ours volunteers at a shelter for women and children, so besides finding a items for ourselves, we found things to donate to the shelter. Finding that, made our week!

    1. Hi Mary,
Oh, you and your sibs must have had so much fun at Goodwill! I do something similar, with these great deals or freebies. If I find something like this, but don't need it for myself, I pick it up anyway and donate to our food bank. I picked up some cat food with a super great coupon, even though we don't have a cat. I put it into the food bank box at church. I do the same with toothpaste surplus, when I get a spectacular deal, and I know we have plenty on hand for ourselves.

  5. That is so awesome! My kids laugh at me when I stop to pick up pennies, but when they do now I will share your story.

    1. Several years ago, our whole family was on vacation, and we decided to see just how much we could find in coins over the course of a week. We found $4.18!! That was enough to buy a large order of French fries to share. Those found pennies do add up!

    1. Hi Dee,
I wish I had a way to tally up all of the money I've found since I was a child. I bet it's significant. Wouldn't it be something if we could add up all of the coins found, for all of us here?!

I can't imagine not picking up a penny when I see it, but to some folks, it's not worth the effort. Go figure!!

  7. You got me on that one...really thought there was a free pile at Kohl 's lol. Those are terrific coupons, much like the SYWR points back coupons and surprise points. My husband and I have our own accounts and we don't receive the same offers. Are you able to have a different account for each family member? Imagine getting five of those coupons or having them more often!! With Sears and Kmart, between our accounts, we have been getting either a great discount like "buy $20 get $10 back" almost every week. Plus there are almost completely free points back on partners. We're running out of things to buy lol. Fortunately, our local Kmart sells fresh produce in bags and a snack bar where I can use points (didn't see this in the mainland). This week we're going to look for some clothes at Sears. I wonder how they can give away "free" stuff like that....but I do use the points occasionally on regular price merchandise, so I think bottom line the reward program works like a personalized loss leader and 25 percent off sale.

I love your baroque style hooks, and to get a pair by buying each free. So serendipitous, down to the pennies. Great story!!

    Have a wonderful day :)

    1. Hi YHF,
I had to smile at your comment that you are running out of things to buy. I feel the same way, and sometimes think I should just not use those $10 off coupons because it is too much work to "have to" find something, but then I come to my senses and go and get something practical that I know I or someone I know can use.

    2. I love your remark..."come to my senses", because I do the same thing. It takes a bit of coaxing myself to make the effort lol

I have been keeping track of all my frugal savings, like this, in a journal on my laptop. Whenever I come across a humbug deal, where you have to do extra work to yield additional savings, I jot the savings. Also, things like calling our insurance agent to tell him we are now retired, that yielded $61 in return premium over waiting till renewal to report the change. Or calling customer service for a price adjustment. Technically I don't know why stores like Kmart don't price adjust up to the period refunds are allowed. I was one day out of their 7 day price adjustment period, and they told me "no" they can't price adjust. I told them "then I want to return and rebuy" argh!! Fortunately I didn't open the box yet, but even if I had I think they will still accept a return if I am not satisfied with the product. Humbug, but I saved an additional $12.50 on a toaster oven. I wrote "saved $12.50" on my journal...I do this so to keep my motivation up...This past three months, I saved $1,157. Not manufacturers coupon or sales/clearance purchasing, because I expect to do this as the norm. Just situations where I have to "come to my senses" lol

    3. Hi YHF,
I think the Kohl's coupons may be tied to the street address. But that would be awesome to get 5 coupons! I always think to myself, what do we need now. But in our family, someone usually needs socks or undies. And then when they don't, I use the coupons in the home decor section or I buy gifts for future occasions. But also, I love the idea of "buying" to give to nearby shelters.

Oh wow! That $1157 is substantial, YHF!! Kudos to you!

    4. I have a little notebook that I write what I call "frugal scores" in. I write in the date too, and it is entertaining to look back and see what amazing deals I got here and there.

    7. I'm glad to hear that you do the same, Mary. Entertaining and an eye opener that's for sure!! Most of the deals are not big amounts, so if I didn't write them all down it would seem like a lot of running around and frustration for only $10 here and there. A big one was the 8 free double burgers at JITB: $41.80 saved. It was a coupon (normally not counted in my journal), but the "ugh" factor was pretty high, cashing in that many free burger coupons and buying only one milkshake (for my dad since he couldn't eat the burgers).

  8. Love it! The two cents at the end makes a great story. I'm not sure how it works, but I never get the $10 coupons. I get other offers from Kohls, but not the straight coupons like that. My sister gets them too, and she doesn't spend any more than I do at Kohls.

    1. Hi live and learn,
I started getting these coupons with no effort on my part. So, I have zero ideas on how they choose where to send them. Do you get the JC Penney's coupons?

    2. I get the JC Penneys coupons a lot but rarely get the Kohls coupons. You did great with your Kohls coupon Lili!

    3. I don't get J. C. Penny coupons, but I don't shop there regularly. It's out of the way of my normal path.

    4. I understand. There are some stores that are reported to have great deals, but they're just not close enough for me to stop in very often, so I bypass them, and those deals.
