Bargains on greeting cards

If you aren't already inundated with free cards from charities soliciting donations, and you just need a couple of Christmas cards, check your thrift stores, first, before going to the dollar store.

I was at St. Vincent de Paul yesterday afternoon, and found Christmas cards, with envelopes, at 10 cents each. I only need a couple, so this was the least expensive way for me to buy just what I needed. I had planned on going to Dollar Tree to pick up cards. I saved $1.20 (over buying the 50-cent cards at Dollar Tree), on 3 cards.

  1. I have often seen greeting cards at thrift stores with varying prices. Sometimes they are cheaper than at the Dollar Store and sometimes they are more expensive. As with everything else, you have to pay attention to what you're buying. BTW, I like the cards you found--very pretty.

    1. Hi live and learn,
You're right, sometimes things at thrift stores cost more than what I find at dollar stores. I just pass those items by. I was thrilled to find a good enough selection of greeting cards at St Vincent de Paul's, yesterday, priced so low. I don't like to spend a whole lot of Christmas cards, as they are such a temporary thing, in most cases.

Have a great day, live and learn!

  2. Wow! What a great find on such pretty Christmas cards. We have a Goodwill store in my area, but I haven't been in probably a little over a year. I need to start going in there more often. Sometimes, I don't find anything, but sometimes I do.

As for greeting cards, the prices are ridiculous in grocery and drug stores! I buy most of my greeting cards at Dollar General. There is a large selection of cards for $0.50 and a selection of fancier cards for $1.00 each. A few weeks ago, I was picking up some groceries at WalMart on my lunch hour. I remembered that I needed to get a birthday card in the mail that day to a family member. I didn't have time to stop anywhere else on my lunch hour, and after work would have been too late to have the card go out in that day's mail. I picked up a card at WalMart, and paid almost $5.00. I was kicking myself! I really over paid for not planning ahead!

Now, I've started trying to plan ahead a little better. My new system is the last week of the month, I look ahead at the next month for birthdays, etc., and make a list of the cards I need. Then I make a trip to Dollar General and buy the cards I will need for that month. It saves quite a bit of money!

    Have a great day!

    1. Hi Angie,
Ouch! that price on the birthday card must have hurt. But just keep in mind that you put a smile on that recipient's face by remembering them. Maybe that was worth having spent the $5. We do our best, and forgive ourselves when we're not perfect.

I try to do as you do, with planning ahead, and buy whatever cards that I need for the month, all at one time. It doesn't always work out, but when it does, I'm prepared. When I bought the Christmas cards, I also bought some cards that will work for birthdays, so I am covered for a few people on my list, at least.

      Have a great day, Angie!

  3. I'm with you, Lili. I generally don't pay over $.50 for a card these days, as there are many to be found in thrift stores or at rummage sales. A couple years ago, our church rummage sale had hundreds of very nice cards that they were selling 3 for $.25 and I bought A LOT! A nearby gift shop had gone out of business, and my guess is that they were donated from there. Some of these cards I see the exact same ones of in gift shops for $3.50 or more and I feel so smug. :)

    1. Hi Mary,
What a find on all of those greeting cards! And the proceeds went to a good cause. If a person is not overly picky, there are a lot of greeting cards out there for 50 cents each or less, at dollar stores and thrift shops. I'll be checking our churches rummage sale next spring (thanks for that tip).

      Have a great day, Mary!

  4. Good tip! I no longer really send out cards, and sense that others are alongside me as it had become a stresser and the costs were significant. When the kids had annual school photos taken, I would tuck them inside and send them to relatives. I really only send one now to my Mom, my brothers never send me any cards. So, I use what I still have from boxed sets and go from there. I agree, a dollar store or thrift store would be the way to go, if possible and if the price was less than what the dollar store is asking.

    1. Hi Carol,
You're right, a lot of folks just don't have the free time to do cards to everyone they know. I do a few electronic cards, and family photos are posted on facebook for most of our long-distance friends/family. So, I only have a couple of cards to send out with actual photos in them, to the people who I think would hang on to the photo. That's good that you still have some from boxed sets. those should lats a while.

      Have a great day, Carol!

  5. Really nice cards😇 I still have enough cards from clearance for a few years. We almost culled them when we moved due to lack of shortage. No garage no storage closest on the so glad we saved them! They are so much this time of year good call on the thrift store.

    1. Hi Patti,
You made the right choice, to hang onto cards. Good job! Fortunately cards don't take up that much space, compared to other items you might hang onto, with equivalent value to replace. The hard part is finding the things you saved, after a move.

I hope your day is off to a great start, Patti!
