Do You Know What This Is?

These are our leafy greens for May and June! Yep, I planted curly kale, Lacinato kale, and Romaine lettuce in soil-filled cells under a light about a week ago. Still no sign of the tomato sprouts, but I'll give those another few days.

It may still be very chilly here, but my indoor starter garden is doing well. I keep the light fixture and planting cells on top of the dryer, where they get a lot of bottom-heat. I think that helps the tiny plants grow.

  1. Good idea, putting them on top of the dryer! I need to try that, though I think my light is a bit too long. Might be able to rig it, though. I have been slacking and not started any plants indoors this year, but I did sprinkle a packet of spinach seed out in one of the garden beds a few weeks ago and it's up and growing well.

  2. Oh, yum! I'm imagining fresh salads now, with an olive oil sweet and sour dressing I make. I was thinking of planting some lettuce seeds. I'd better get on that!

  4. Hi Cat,
Years ago, I used to sprout my seeds on top of the TV. Now TV's are so slim that there's no way a flat of seedlings cold perch on top. But the dryer does work well for me. I hope you can rig something in a warm spot for your seedlings!
Oh, wow! fresh spinach from the garden. Enjoy that!

  6. Hi Kris,
You're right -- it is fun to watch them grow! I check on them every morning when I turn the grow lights on. I'm not sure, but I think the tomatoes may be about to sprout. Something is just barely beginning to poke through the soil in those cells.

  7. Hi Alice,
I hope your dad plants lots of lettuce in his garden this summer for you! Fresh greens are so delicious. I can hardly wait for mine to grow into something.
