Making a Small Vial of Cake Decors Last for Years

Our New Year's Eve and New Year's Day dessert was a scratch pumpkin-spice snack cake, topped with vanilla buttercream frosting, bits and globs of white chocolate (leftover from drizzling onto some cookies for Christmas), and edible gold stars. I bought the star cake decors in 2019 for about $5.75.

Every year, I make some sort of New Year's treat, scattering the gold stars over the top. I've made chocolate-tofu whip topped with the stars, homemade chocolate-frosted donuts topped with stars, frosted chocolate cake topped with stars, and this year a spice cake topped with the stars.

It only takes a teaspoon of stars to add sparkle to a family dessert. At this rate, my little vial of stars will last us another 3 to 4 years. That works out to about 72 to 82 cents per year for our special New Year's homemade treat. If $6 for edible accents sounds pricey, consider that as accents, I use them sparingly and get a lot of mileage out of a tiny vial.

  1. The stars are indeed festive. I don't decorate baked goods very often, so my sprinkles and such are lasting for years, too. I will not be buying the round sprinkles again, however. No matter how careful I am, there always seem to ones rolling around on the counters.

    1. Hi Live and Learn,
You're right about those round sprinkles. They roll around and find their way to the corners of the counter, only to be found many days later. Or, when I've sprinkled cookie cut-outs to bake, the ones that didn't make it onto the dough roll right off the baking sheet and onto the floor.

  2. Your stars are pretty, and you could use them for many occasions, not just at the holidays. My sprinkles tend to last for years. I did buy some new ones (and made up frosting in different colors) for my daughter's friends to use while "decorating" her birthday cake. That activity always seems to be a hit, and I feel like it's an inexpensive fun activity.

    1. Hi Kris,
Your daughter's birthday party activity sounds like something she and her friends must really enjoy. The bonus is they get to eat the cake after they're done decorating. Have you seen the food coloring gels in neon colors? They're made by Betty Crocker and aren't truly neon, but labeled that. The colors are vibrant -- orange, purple, lime green, and hot pink. I thought about those when you mention ed your daughter and her teen friends decorating a cake together. My own daughter bought these colors for something she was making a couple of years ago.
