Snow Days -- Me Getting Stuff Done in the Kitchen

I think a snow day is a good day to

  • do a little baking (blueberry muffins today)
  • clean out the fridge
  • refill containers and organize the pantry
  • sit in a cozy spot by the window and watch snow fall
My daughters think a snow day is a good day to
  • go for long walks in the snow
  • play in the snow
  • drink cocoa
My husband thinks a snow day is a good day to
  • check tree and shrub damage from the snow
  • catch up on favorite podcasts on his lunch hour

What do you think a snow day is good for?

  1. I'm between you and your daughters, Lili. I like my long walks in the snow -- especially while the snow's still falling; but I also like to make long-cooking things like stew or chili, bake, and stand by the fire, listen to quiet music, and watch the snow fall. I also like to do handwork projects. (Yarn is fun to dig through when it's chilly.) And come to think of it, I worry about/inspect our broken trees and shrubs, like your husband, too. :) I saw your town on my evening news, and was thinking of you guys. Hope you weren't ones who lost power. Stay warm and safe, Sara

    1. Hi Sara,
The snow was very heavy and wet. We didn't lose our electricity, but two neighbors had tress fall, one across the road and had to be cleared, and the other in their driveway hitting their car. We had several trees that were snow-pruned, but no serious damage. It's still very cold, so the snow is still with us.

Working with yarn sounds like such a pleasant activity for a snow day. I really need to put together supplies for a project, so I'll have something to go right to on the next snow day.

  2. The beauty and quietness of snow makes me slow down and think about putting something in the crockpot and watching a movie. However, it also makes wonder how the roads are and what's closed. It also means suiting up and shoveling.

    1. Hi Live and Learn,
I haven't done any shoveling this year. I'm still babying my shoulder. Most of the time, though, neither of us shovel the snow, as it only lasts a few days. Plus, our driveway is fairly level, so we can get in and out, even with packed snow on it. But I do like how tidy the driveways and walkways look that have been shoveled. The next neighborhood over is like that, with tidily shoveled walks up to each door.

  3. It depends on the kind of snow. If it's a blizzard-like snow, indoors is the best place to be. I'm not a fan of high winds, especially when there is snow involved. If it's a picturesque snow with giant snowflakes, then being outside snowshoeing brings me great joy. My favorite snowy day indoor activities include baking (likely bread, with soup for dinner), reading, doing puzzles, and crafting. I wouldn't say no to a tea or hot chocolate break, either. :) If it isn't too blustery, I'm one of those odd people who doesn't mind shoveling. Weird, I know.

    1. Hi Kris,
Snowshoeing sounds like so much fun and a great way to get exercise in winter!
This last snowfall began with gigantic flakes of snow. It was beautiful to watch it come down.
