Grocery Spending November 2025

my 2nd grocery haul of November, just before Thanksgiving

I grocery shopped 3 days in person in November, one at Walmart, then the trip that I previously blogged about and this one above. I also gave my daughter $10 to go get some donuts for us on the day after Thanksgiving. It was the end of the month, and I knew we had at least $10 left in the budget, so we splurged! She spent all $10 and chipped in about 75 cents of her own money.

Just before Thanksgiving I needed a few items, so I made the trip down to WinCo, photo above. From left to right, front to back, here's what I bought at WinCo for $119.38:

2 dozen eggs
1 gallon milk
1 bundle celery
8 Fuji apples
4 bananas
1 head cabbage
10 lbs carrots
big bulk bag raisins
big bulk bag peanuts
2 large sweet potatoes
2 bags of cranberries
4 cans corn
3 avocados
1/2 lb mushrooms
4 lbs oranges
4 cans green beans
bulk fresh ground peanut butter
small bulk bag iodized salt
small bulk bag almond flour
2 lb bag tangerines
8 lbs butter
2 blocks mozzarella
1 block cheddar
2 large cans tomato paste
4 cans black olives
1 jar green olives
1 bag breakfast sausage
1 pint whipping cream
small amount of bulk bin coffee for making cold brew
2 bags frozen peas

We're pretty much well-stocked. Some of these items I haven't even touched yet, obviously some of the canned veggies, but also the bag of tangerines, the bag of carrots, the avocados, the eggs, most of the butter, and the peanut butter.

Most of what I bought specifically for Thanksgiving was priced near what I recall spending a few years ago. The celery was 97 cents/bundle, cranberries were 97 cents/bag, sweet potatoes were 97 cents/lb, canned olives were 98 cents ea, and canned veggies were 50 cents/can. The whipping cream was $2.58/pint, and I can't recall what I've paid for that in recent years. Do you recall if any of the Thanksgiving foods were a fair deal this year? I wouldn't say we got bargains on those foods, but at least I didn't feel gouged.

My total for the month spending, then, was $255.19 ($11.06 Walmart, $114.75 WinCo, $119.38 WinCo, $10 donuts) in person plus $119.66 pro-rated portion of beef delivery, for a grand total of $374.85 My budgeted amount is a max of $400 per month, with usual spending typically between $375 and $400. I came in just about average this month.

Next time I shop I'll be buying Christmas foods!

How's the snow been in your area? We had a tiny amount of snow and rain mixed yesterday afternoon, but just rain since. I will say that it's been cold for here. I now get out for a walk in the afternoon, after the real chill has worn off, and it is still quite cold. And the nights have been very cold for me. Today when I did the laundry and remade the bed, I added a comforter to the layers. I'm hoping this will make sleeping much more comfortable. It's tricky. You put too many layers on the bed, and you wake up sweating, or like for me, I wake with a headache. If you put too few layers on, I find it too chilly to sleep well. Let's hope I got it right for tonight. I hope everyone is warm and cozy right now. Talk to you more tomorrow.

  1. Those were some very good prices on your Thanksgiving's foods. I didn't see many things on sale for Thanksgiving around here. The weather is cold with temps in the 20s at night and 30-40s during the day. Yesterday, we had a mixture of snow and rain. I am spending a lot more time indoors these days because I dislike the cold.

    1. Hi Live and Learn,
I can't speak for prices at other stores in my area. But WinCo really does try to keep prices down. They may have been hoping to get folks to buy all of their groceries by offering some of the Thanksgiving foods at fair prices. Although I didn't buy a turkey, I think the sign said they were 84 cents/lb. It's been years since I've bought a turkey, so I don't know how that compares to previous years. But yes, I was glad to find decent prices.

It sounds chilly there this week. Enjoy the indoor time. At least there's lots to do inside this time of year. (decorating, baking, online gift shopping, wrapping)

  2. Our Thanksgiving prices were on par with previous years. We had turkey, potatoes, squash, raisin/apple dressing, and cranberry sauce. I found sparkling cider at Aldi and added that for fun. Oh, and we had pumpkin pie. I read somewhere that the grocery stores were keeping our turkey prices low (I think maybe they didn't make much profit). The items that I'm seeing a big price increase on are chocolate chips (boo!), coffee, olive oil, and butter. Aldi had a sale on butter recently and I bought a few pounds to freeze, but I find that we don't go through much butter these days.

We have the most snow I think I've ever seen this early in our season. We got roughly a foot over the weekend, and close to a foot a day ago. The most recent storm was an odd one, which targeted a few counties on the Lake Michigan lakeshore. We were in the bullseye. I've gotten my cardio in, shoveling, these past few days.

I hope you enjoyed your donuts!

    1. Hi Kris,
Coffee and chocolate/cocoa powder are still much more expensive here. Butter has been better this fall. The sale price has been under $3 this fall, whereas last year, it was $3.50/lb. And eggs are much, much better now compared to January.. So the savings are a mixed bag.

I saw a photo of some serious snow in your region earlier this week. I hope the roads have been cleared regularly. That's good that you can look on the bright side and see that you've at least gotten lots of exercise in. I try to have a similar attitude when I have to do some heavy work around here. It helps make the time pass more quickly to find the positives.

The donuts were good and still crispy, but expensive! It's a family-owned shop, so I feel a little better paying so much for a handful of donuts. Getting donuts on Black Friday is one of our traditions.

It seems that many parts of the US are getting early snow this season. That has been the case in some parts of NC as well. But here in our island, we haven’t yet had any frost!

Your prices Lili, are similar to the prices I saw in Aldi when I traveled, such as canned veggies for .50/can. The prices at more traditional grocery stores weren’t that low. I don’t feel gouged at .50/can, but I just remember when corn, peas and green beans were frequently on sale for .25/can. :( The one item that is significantly lower here than you reported, is sweet potatoes. The week of Thanksgiving, they are always available for .25 # at most all grocery stores. But, when you are the largest producer of sweet potatoes in the country, there are some advantages! I stocked up :)

    1. Hi Lynn,
I was explaining to one of my kids that "dollar days" used to mean I could get 10 cans of tomatoes for $1. That low amount sounds incredulous to someone who never lived then. The bargain price on sweet potatoes in your area sounds about what I'd expect. I wish we could get them here for that price. How do you store them when you stock up?

It's exciting to see snow in December. But I'm also grateful to not have to deal with it just yet. Is it normal for the coastal areas in NC to get snow?
