Turns out you don't even need the sun to make Sun Tea

So it was a cloudy morning yesterday. The sun didn't peek through until after it would have been on the deck (pesky trees, the sun goes behind them around 2 PM).

Anyways, I poured cold tap water into a large tea pot and added 3 small tea bags (well, 2 bags and 1 tea ball).

I left it sitting on the kitchen counter at about 68 degrees F all day. To my surprise, by 3 PM I had tea about the strength of my sun tea. It probably would have become stronger with heat. But this was just fine for me. I let the pot of tea sit on the counter until bedtime, when I put it in the fridge.

This morning, I have cold tea, ready and waiting for me. I can heat a cup in the microwave or drink it over ice. No electricity or sun needed to "brew" a pot of tea.

I never would have thought . . .

  1. I put a quart jar full of water into the fridge last night with two tea bags and I have some perfectly good tea this afternoon. Since I am the only one who drinks tea around here, this works perfectly for me.

    1. Hi live and learn,
we were on the same wave-length! Now I'm wondering . . .do we really need the coffee maker? If the sun comes out, I'd like to try making sun coffee.

    1. Hi Shara,
I never would have guessed that tea could be made without heat. I just always assumed you *had* to heat the water. Otherwise, why would folks put the tea in the sun for Sun Tea? But glad I know this now.

  3. I've heard somewhere before that you can brew tea this way--I'd forgotten.

    1. Hi Kris,
I'd never heard this before. And then last night, I was reading someone's trip report from their vacation, and she talked about making a cup of tea in her hotel room, just using a tea bag in a mug of tap water over night. She didn't mind that it wasn't hot, just wanted some tea to get started for the day.

    1. Hi Economies,
just one of those happy experiments that actually works! I figure, in winter, I'll about halve the amount of time I microwave my tea, as I normally microwave just the water, drop a tea bag in it. Then after the tea is brewed, I have to reheat it to get it hot again.

And last night, when I'd drunk all the tea I had made, I added a half tea pot of water to the bags, and now have half a pot of tea. Lastly, I'll actually boil some water and see if I can't extract that last bit of flavor, if there is any.

  6. and putting just one tea bag in a carafe of water in the fridge makes that water so much more interesting! Better than "crystal lite" or whatever that stuff is and a good way of using up teabags that aren't that nice in a hot cuppa.

    1. Hi Jessica,
I seem to collect odd teas. People know that I enjoy tea, so they give me all their leftovers that they don't care for as hot tea. I use them in iced tea all summer long. Now I'll try just putting the bags in pitchers of water in the fridge. Great way to use everything up!
