My weekend

We had such a beautiful weekend, here, in Seattle. As usual, one daughter came with me on errands. We made a detour to the beach for a couple of hours and sat in the sunshine, talked, walked along the shoreline collecting shells, and enjoyed the peace of an autumn day at the beach. Summer days at the beach are filled with lively families; but autumn days are quiet. Even the families who were also there on Saturday were quietly enjoying the sand and water.

The tide was very low which makes finding shells in good condition a lot easier. We also saw the largest jelly fish that we've ever spotted in Puget Sound waters. In addition, this particular beach seems to be a good spot for watching the harbor seals. It never fails that while we are there, we can watch at least one harbor seal bobbing through the water.

Sunday was equally peaceful and filled with sunshine. My daughters put together a cookout for the family in the evening. After dinner we made s'mores, but not with marshmallows. We used circus peanut candy instead (it's what we had). Circus peanuts are a semi-dried marshmallow. They actually do puff and soften when roasted over a fire, just not as much as a regular marshmallow. The resulting s'more is very tasty, although not at all gooey.

And today the rain is back. It's also the first day of classes for my daughters. One daughter is a part time student, primarily focusing on her senior project, which is an art show in the spring. The other daughter is completing her requirements for the other half of her major field -- education. She's taking a couple of classes and student teaching this year. And speaking of said daughter, she overslept a bit, and now I'm driving her to the transit center. I hope you all had a lovely weekend and that your week is off to a great beginning. Be back tomorrow!

  1. What a nice weekend with your family! The girls are really into back yard cookouts, aren't they?

It's been brutally hot here. I've been avoiding being outdoors. The weather is supposed to moderate Wednesday and then by Thursday we will be back to autumnal weather. Looking forward to it.

  2. Sounds very relaxing and rejuvinating. Brutally hot and humid out here in CT, I'm staying in A/C.

  3. Oh how lovely! I enjoy the ocean more when it is quiet
and peaceful. The weather has been nice here too. It is suppose to heat up today. I hope they are wrong. Crossing my fingers that the sun comes out today for you. That is really creative to use the candy peanuts.
    Blessings,

  4. Hi Lili,

Good to "see" you. Like Kris, we're having extreme heat for a few more days. It is in the 90s and we're running our AC nonstop for the last 4 days and will continue for the next 4 days or so. Even schools are only holding morning classes and dismissing by noon due to the heat. I've never seen that before.

I almost wish we could have a campfire but I can't enjoy them with all my newly acquired allergies. I did a bit of outside work on Saturday and both hubby and son made sure to remind me to hurry up and get showered so none of it has time to become an allergic reaction!

But we still do a fair amount of walks but we stay close to residential streets and not so much in woodsy areas. There is a foot trail running along a major highway and we will walk that because it is paved and wide enough and it is kept up by the county parks or something.

Our meals lately have been simple and just OK. It's too hot to turn the oven on and too hot to grill so its salads and other easy things.

    1. Hi Alice,
Remind me where you are located? That's interesting that school has dismissed due to heat. Here in the NC Outer Banks we're preparing for a visit from Hurricane Maria, but our temps have not been that hot. It's been in the 80s but not the 90s. I've seen some really high temps around the country for September. Hope the temps will moderate for you soon!

  5. And I'm another one that is trying to get out of the hot weather of 80's and 90's. What a lovely weekend for you and your family to have before the hectic school schedule starts up again. I'm not sure how I feel about circus peanuts on s'mores. I like them but I'm having a hard time imagining it. I'll just have to take your word for it that they were good.

  6. Your trip to the beach sounds so neat, Lili. I would love to see a seal like that. Being by the ocean is so peaceful.

I was walking into a store today and heard some honking and looked up as some Canadian geese flew overhead. So neat.

Your circus peanut smores sound interesting. I always liked circus peanuts but only one or two at a time. LOL
