Pumpkin-Spice Applesauce

This was actually really good. When I first mixed it up, I wasn't sure we'd like it that much. I made it as a way to use up the last of a jar of applesauce and some thawed pumpkin puree.

I mixed together about 1/3 home-cooked pumpkin puree, a little over 1/3 applesauce, and the rest was water to thin to the right consistency (pumpkin puree tends to be thicker than applesauce), brown sugar, and pumpkin pie spices (ground cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves). That's it. I shook the water up in the near-empty applesauce jar and used that to thin the mixture, getting near every last drop of applesauce from the container.

This was a very frugal lunch addition and appropriate for the season. And the bonus is the pumpkin's nutrients were hidden in a side dish that I know my family enjoys. I can't wait to make another batch!

  1. That's an interesting combination, and I can't decide if I would like it or not. I'm kind of weird in that I like pumpkin pie a lot, but don't like pumpkin pie spice in most other things. However, the combo of pumpkin and applesauce is very nutritious and I could spice it differently. I may have to give it a try.

    1. Hi Live and Learn,
All I can say is we enjoyed it very much, and I'll be making it again, as it's a great way to slip in some extra nutrients.

  2. Ooh, yummy. I love the combo of pumpkin and apples. I'd probably put that on pancakes!

    1. Hi Kris,
Topping pancakes with the pumpkin-applesauce is a great idea! I can definitely see us doing this for a breakfast for dinner meal.

    2. I love applesauce on top of pancakes, especially homemade applesauce.

    3. Hi again, Kris. I made French toast for dinner tonight and topped the slices with a maple-apple compote. It was so delicious. My family said they enjoyed the apple compote more than maple syrup. Thanks to you for the inspiration for tonight!

  3. I can see that working just like having a peach applesauce or some other kind of fruit mixed in with applesauce. I use squash (butternut) most of the time and it is something that I need to ration out because it is so popular around here. We use it in just about everything and so I probably will never have a little leftover to put into applesauce.

    1. Hi Alice,
Oh yum, peach applesauce sounds delicious!

Do you ever add pureed butternut squash to mashed potatoes or potato soup? I had some leftover potato soup to use for today's lunch, so I stirred in some pumpkin puree and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

    2. yes, I have made mashed potatoes and mashed butternut squash and gently swirl them together and that is a delicious combo also. We use butternut squash puree in soups all the time and that is where the squash becomes so popular. It just adds something that we all love.
