Cheap & Cheerful Suppers for the Late Garden Season

We're still using a lot of garden produce in meals and snacks, although much of what we're now using has been harvested and brought indoors and not as much is garden fresh. But the meals have been delicious and wholesome. Here were our suppers for the week.

Friday

Friday

taco salads -- tortilla chips, beef, beans, garden lettuce, garden tomatoes, garden green onions, cheese
plums and cookies for dessert

Saturday

Saturday
garden kale and tomato frittata
white rice

Sunday (sorry, no photo)
bean burritos
apple wedges
tomatoes

Monday

Monday
beef stir fry with garden cabbage and carrots
white rice

Tuesday

Tuesday
chicken pot pie, using garden pumpkin, green beans, celery, sage, garlic, parsley, and purchased onion, plus leftover chicken in stock
blackberry cobbler

Wednesday

Wednesday
more taco salads -- using the other half of the bag of tortilla chips, beef, beans, garden lettuce, garden tomatoes, garden green onions, and cheese
plums and blackberry cobbler for dessert

Thursday
coconut lentil curry over brown rice
tomato wedges

Friends, can I ask you to pray about something for me. I'm sad, scared and worried about an upcoming dental procedure. I fractured a tooth all the way to the bone recently and saw the dentist today. She said there's no way to save the tooth, and I'll have to have it extracted. For those of you who pray, could you pray that I will have courage to face this. It will be months before I can have an implant placed in the bone tissue. I know others have faced this type of situation. Knowing that helps me. Are there dental procedures you've been faced with that have been especially difficult? I know others go through much more difficult situations. But this is what I'm going through right now.

Because I needed to distract myself from my lousy dental visit, when I came home my two daughters were around and they kept me company while I made our green tomato sweet pickle relish. We made 5 half-pint jars, enough for the year. I used small green tomatoes that wouldn't ripen indoors (the plants are blackening from blight brought on with the week of cold rains), a garden red pepper and a garden green peppers, 1 whole onions from the store, some spices, sugar and vinegar. I can't always get rid of the discouragements in life, but I can try to add some successes to bad days. It makes me feel like the good and bad are better balanced, rather than a strictly bad day.

Something just occurred to me, that I can add to the "good" side of the balance for today. Knowing that you friends are reading here really cheers me up.

Wishing you all a lovely autumn weekend.

  2. Hello, ask your dentist ( insurance as well) about bone graft - a procedure of about 10 mins that is done by the dentist using your own blood in order to heal the wound ( within 1-2 wks in my husband's case) and ready for implant pretty quick afterwards.I am attaching a link for you to read about the procedure.Best of luck! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3683340/

    1. Thank you for this. I will read this article and ask about a bone graft. That would be much better than a couple of months for healing. Thank you!

  3. Praying for you Lili! I've been through so many dental and medical procedures in my life and each time the Lord has showed Himself to be there helping me, He will never leave us or forsake us. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything with prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God and the peace that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus! I'm sure you're familiar with that verse.... I like what a friend of mine said, replace fear with trust and faith in the Lord. So I try to do that by using the time I'm spending worrying and fearing thanking Him for His help and protection....it truly is much easier to trust than to fear.

    1. Thank you for prayers, Alice. I go in for a consultation with the oral surgeon on Monday, so I'll know more then. I'm guessing in the next 2 weeks.

Lili, I will pray for you. I had a dental appt this week with some unexpected news as well. My results weren't as worrisome as yours, but I understand what you are going through.

    1. Hi Lynn,
I'm so sorry to hear you had a dental visit that didn't go as well as you'd hoped or thought. I pray that all works out well for you and is easy to mediate.
Thank you so much for prayers.

Thank you for your prayers. I feel with this community that we are all connected when we pray over someone. It's a virtual way to stand together holding hands. Thank you for your wise words.

  7. Oh my goodness, I just accidentally deleted my comment. Sometimes I worry about my brain. Anyway, Lili, I think your concerns about your dental procedure are very understandable--I'd feel the same way, and I appreciate your vulnerability in requesting prayer from us. Virtual hugs to you.

I'm salivating over your chicken pot pie. I generally make mine with a biscuit topping because it's easier, but yum, one with a pie crust would be a treat.

I recently found a great deep dish pizza recipe that we've been enjoying. The crust is a no-knead crust--you honestly can't get any easier than this, and it's sooo good! I am linking the recipe in case anyone is interested. https://www.seasonsandsuppers.ca/perfect-pan-pizza/

    1. Hi Kris,
Thank you for prayers and virtual hugs, Kris. I really appreciate it.

We love pie crust on a chicken pie. I keep some pie pastry in the freezer to make doing it this way extra easy for me.
That pizza crust looks delicious. You can see the bubbles of air in the cut slice. Thanks for including the link!

  8. I haven't commented before, but have been reading your blog for months. I really enjoy it and your meals give me so many ideas. I'm commenting today about your dental situation. I had a tooth pulled about 10 months ago, and they're just going to be putting in the implant next month - had to wait for any inflammation to go down. I've totally adjusted to not having a tooth there and I haven't had any pain except for the week after the tooth was pulled. Sending prayers, but letting you know it wasn't too terrible.

Thank you so ,much for your prayers and sharing your experience. It really does help me feel like I can get through this. I hope your implant procedure goes extremely smoothly.

  9. I never have that procedure but I would rather do other things than go to the dentist. If you haven't make sure they know your fear and give us the best meds you can. No time to just be brave. Good luck Lili

    1. Hi Cheryl,
Thank you for the advice. I will do just that. You're right, this is not the time to fake bravery. And I'm guessing they deal with many, many people who are afraid of this type of dental work. Thank you again for the encouragement and kind words.

  10. I recently had an old crown removed and what was left of the tooth was cracked in 3 places. I convinced my dentist to remove it right then instead of sending me to the oral surgeon. It hurt but it came out well and I only took some Tylenol right after the extraction. I've a had a few sore moments since then but never enough to need pain meds.
I've had an implant in the past - the worst part was the numbing shot in the roof of my mouth
I can understand your concerns and will pray.

    1. Hi Jo,
Thank you so much for your prayers. I appreciate prayers so much.

Wow! At least you got the tooth removed immediately and could then begin to move forward. And I'm so very glad you didn't have much pain afterward.
And thank you for sharing your experience with an implant. That helps me.

    1. Hi Cat,
Thank you for your prayers, Cat. Calmness is something I really need more of right now.

Our meals have gotten simpler in the last few months. And lots of repeats, mostly because we find something everyone loves and wants so soon again. This week that was taco salads two nights.
