A week ago Saturday we slid right into November in my area. We had 8 days of rain, dark clouds, and cool weather, 1 day of sunshine (yesterday), and now, today, the November-like rain and dark clouds have returned. All last week I kept thinking about fall.
I had previously mentioned plans to go to Dollar Tree to check out their autumn decor. I did go, but to the one that was convenient at the time. That one is always later to get stuff put out or doesn't get the selection that the other location near me. But it was convenient for my errands that day.
So on Friday I went to the Dollar Tree which my daughter had mentioned had a good display of fall decor pieces. Here's what I bought:
4 small artificial pumpkins, 2 faux wheat-like sprays, 1 autumn leaf spray, and 1 russet mum spray. The cost was $10 plus tax. (Dollar Tree is now $1.25-Tree.) I used a gift card given to me by my daughters a year ago for my birthday, which covered all but a little over $1 of my purchase.
These are for the wall troughs by our front door. being in complete shade up against the house on the north side, I'm going with artificial botanicals and pumpkins.
For as early in the season as I went, the fall decor pieces were beginning to look a bit picked over. I bought what they had in stock at the time. I would like to check out a 3rd Dollar Tree for more of the mums and leaves. With the 1st of September right around the corner, I'll be putting these together very soon and will show you how they turned out at that time.
What a great gift idea that your daughters had for you. These will look so pretty in your wall troughs.
ReplyDeleteHi Kris,
DeleteIt was a really great gift idea for me. I can buy decor things without guilt that I'm spending household money. I'm looking forward to putting these together. How about you? Do you have any special autumn decorations?
I have a bin where I store items that I use seasonally--I've had most of them for years and got them on sale--shocking, I know! I think autumn is my favorite season to decorate for--I have some small pumpkins that I scatter around, an autumn wreath, and so on. I tend to pull out my twinkle lights for the mantel as the days get shorter because it cheers me up. I also buy potted mums for my front porch--we don't really have much landscaping, so I like to try to make my porch look inviting. I'm not into Halloween decorating (some of our neighbors are) and prefer to go with a "fall" theme.
DeleteDollar Tree does have good seasonal items. That was our go to place when we were decorating my mother's nursing home room.
ReplyDeleteHi Live and Learn,
DeleteThat's such a wonderful thing you did for your mother's nursing home room. I remember when my grandmother had a stroke and was moved into a nursing home, the first time I was able to visit (she lived in another state from me), her room was so sterile looking. We went to her home before the new owners took possession and brought over a few of her favorite (and inexpensive, should they get taken) decorative things and a chair for visitors. It brightened her spirits and made her room feel a bit more like "home". Decorating your mother's room must have really brought cheer to her days.
You are right, nursing homes tend to look really sterile. We did similar things for our parents--my mom, especially, was very particular about decorating for the holidays, and I think that the process of putting up decorations also added some fun to her days.
