How is everyone faring?

The only snow we have is on the dining room table centerpiece -- fake snow on the pinecones and greenery.

Hi friends,

I'm taking tonight off from posting. It's been a crazy week for me. On top of others issues, our internet went out and it took a few days to get it resolved. They ended up recabling our house, drilled a hole into an outer wall and replaced all of the equipment. But today we have internet again. I had been using the very limited data plan on my 10-year old phone to post, and I have to say that was less than easy. My phone would not tether to my laptop. But maybe that's a good thing. It kept me from hitting my limit and leaving me with nothing for the next 2 weeks. Anyways, that's resolved. But I'm tired. I'll be back to posting tomorrow and will catch up on comments, too.

How is everyone doing? How did the snow and ice storm affect you and your area? We've been cold (for our area that is), but no snow whatsoever. Do you live in one of the areas with widespread power outages? I've been praying everyone is okay.

Be back tomorrow!

  1. We have been in the continuing to get blasted with cold and snow for several weeks now. We haven't really had any relief in that amount of time either. Between extreme cold and a lot of snow, this has been an eventful January (December and back to Thanksgiving) with some very severe weather. Woke up this Tuesday morning to more snow (sstill snowing a lot) and a minimum of 5 to 6 inches. Slide offs on major highways have closed the highways again. Last week was a 100 car pile up from Grand Rapids to Holland that closed the highway most of the day. Many schools were closed all of last week and today I see a bunch more. The older I get the more anxiety I get over this stuff.

    1. Since I'm just a little north of Alice, I'll say "ditto". I drove through white-out conditions to go to a doctor's appointment today. Not fun. I could tell that I hadn't been out much socially, due to the weather--I was very chatty with the staff. :) I like winter, but I dislike the frigid temps. It's too cold for road salt to work and driving is treacherous. On the bright side, I've gotten in several rounds of snowshoeing. My son and I went for 2 1/2 hours on Sunday afternoon. I was TIRED after that.

    2. Hi Alice,
That sounds like a lot of snowfall. I'm guessing that you're really looking forward to spring. Do most people put snow/studded tires on their cars in your area for winter?
Anxiety over this weather and how it is impacting you sounds like the right reaction. I'm sure you're being careful when you do have to go out, especially with walking on ice. Take care.

    3. Hi Kris,
I'm surprised the appointment was kept (by the medical office), with those white-out conditions. I once had to drive in a heavy hail storm that went on for 40 minutes, after dark, on the freeway, and I couldn't see anything except the car in front of me's taillights. That was one of the most stressful drives I've ever had. So I can imagine your drive today was a tense one. It never even occurred to me that road salt wouldn't work below certain temps. Wow, I hope everyone is taking it slow on the roads.

I'm glad you can find the bright side about this. Getting in some snowshoeing with your son must've been really nice. It's nice to remember there are often some small positives to find in these situations.

    4. We don't and I have never seen that either. We just have good "all weather" tires and drive carefully (well some of us do while others don't).

  2. So sorry to hear about your internet difficulties; so frustrating! It's been bathroom plumbing issues over here, ending in having to take our main bathroom (the one with a shower/tub) down to the studs around the tub. That was finally resolved early last week, but is not yet aesthetically-finished. That bathroom will need painting b/c we went with white tile and then we'll probably need to repaint the cabinets which were espresso brown to go with the previous tan tiles. I feel like my project time is so limited with school these days and am married to a procrastinator so it may be ugly in there for a while.

Very cold here for SW Oklahoma, down to single digits with negative windchill at night We got a few inches of sleet over Friday and Saturday which packed down to make an icy layer on the roads under the 3 inches or so of snow that we got early Sunday morning. Because it has stayed cold, roads haven't really improved much. We are finally supposed to get above freezing by this afternoon (Tuesday) but only up to 36 for a short time so it may be another day or two before we see significant improvement.

    1. Hi Cat,
Oh I'm sorry about the bathroom and plumbing issues. At least it's functional. "Pretty" will come later. But I understand the frustrations of not having it completely finished.

That sounds so cold for your area. I'm assuming that because it's rare to get so cold there that homes aren't really built for for those extreme temps. At least that's the way it is here in the coastal PNW. Because the climate is relatively mild in my area, homes aren't as well insulated, and it really is a big deal for those days up to a couple of weeks when the temps drop into the teens here. And absolutely no one knows how to drive in the snow or on ice.

I hope your temperatures moderate very soon!

  3. Posting on your phone is impressive. I am very slow when I do anything like that. We're with most of the country and in a cold snap. On Sunday we got 10" of snow with an 1/2" of ice on top of that. The temperatures have been mostly in the teens and single digits, with a lot of wind. COLD! Yesterday was our warm day when it got up to 20. The sun was out and helped with the roads where they had been plowed. I haven't been out for several days, but I think I'll go out today to pick up a prescription.

    1. Hi Live and Learn,
Oh wow, 10 inches! The ice topping the snow is what I was reading about, making it near impossible to shovel any of the snow. How was the driving today? I hope your trip out to get an rx was completely uneventful.

Hello, sounds like everyone is cold right now. Same for us, though we have remained one of the “warmer” parts of NC. We got no frozen precipitation just rain, which confirmed that patching our roof was successful. (Like others, we are having house challenges). We always have wind here so low, single wind chills here. Everyone stay warm! We are hunkering down and staying home! Glad you’re back up and running g Lili.

    1. Hi Lynn,
Yay for having a roof that doesn't leak in a major storm!!! I hope the arctic air retreats soon. Staying home and hunkering down sounds like a good plan. Grab a cup of cocoa or tea, a warm blanket/throw, and a good book. My other favorite way to spend time indoors is baking. I hope you're finding enjoyable ways to spend these days, Lynn.

  5. In Utah - we NEED the snow! This year is very unusual - 50 degree temps predicted by week's end. We are suffering from a significantly below average snow season. We are so dependent on snow in the mountains for our water - we are praying for a "miracle March" to increase totals. Stay safe everyone!

    1. Hi Ruthie,
I hope you do get a good snowfall soon. It's so dry in summers where you live. I can understand how this is so critical. I'll say a prayer for snow for your mountains.
