Last Cookout of the Season

It's been a beautiful autumn week in my area. I've spent the last two days digging potatoes. The soil is dry enough that digging is not terribly difficult. The sun was in and out, but always warm enough while working. And I never became too hot while digging. It looks like we'll have about 20 lbs of potatoes for this fall and winter.

The garlic is harvested, too, but not replanted for next year yet. It didn't do as well as the year before, but I think we'll have enough to get through most of the year. I'm almost done harvesting tomatoes. The tomatoes have done very well. I have enough tomatoes indoors slowly ripening to last through October. The pumpkins and squash are now inside (with exception to the pumpk-ini). It's been a good harvest.

With the weather so lovely during the day it seemed appropriate to have one last cookout this evening. I skipped making hot dog buns. But we still had hot dogs. I also made a Mexican corn skillet dish (using canned corn, garden green pepper, onion, garlic, spices), baked lentils (like baked beans, but a lot faster to make), watermelon, yellow tomatoes, the last of the apple wedges from Sunday, leftover baked squash, and s'mores for dessert -- delicious food, budget-friendly, and easy to throw together.

We lingered around the fire ring just a little longer tonight, knowing this would be the last time we'd do this for a long while.

The rain is expected to return on Friday, which means I need to get some of the patio furniture into the garage in the next day or two.

Are there any "lasts" for you this month? What will you do that marks the transition from outdoor activity to indoor time?

  1. It has been a crazy spring and summer. My husband contracted Salmonella early June and it took 2 full months to recover. We had a new 4 season porch put on that is maintence free so no more climbing on the roof to clean it. Too much rain early this summer created flooding that created sink holes in our back yard and then back flow from said rain into the new porch wetting the new carpet (never had wetness in the old porch before). Had to get an excavator to find out why sinkholes were happening. An old unused septic tank was collapsing. Now we need to get drainage back that handled which will be buried basin(s) and drain tile. Then my van wouldn't start and needed to be in the shop 6 days with hefty price tag. The microwave died. My laptop computer died. And now it's October and didn't do anything this summer except wait for answers, wait for equipment and still waiting for the drainage tiling job to be done which might not happen until spring. We did get to travel twice to see our grandson and when he knew us and called us "Memaw" and "Papa" that made our day! Our daughter is using this saying in her classroom and I think I'm going to adopt it too. "The leaves change, but God never changes". I love that so much. Such a good reminder
