Oh, how I love cabbage (and other romantic odes)

I was chopping cabbage last night and thinking to myself how much I love cabbage. It isn't that cabbage is the yummiest food on Earth. But it's cheap (49 cents/lb the past month at Fred Meyer -- a bargain for veggies), keeps in the fridge for weeks and weeks, and is versatile enough to make either a hot dish or a cold salad.

Last night, we had sauteed cabbage, seasoned with soy sauce, garlic, ginger and a pinch of sugar. Tonight I'll add cabbage to our dinner of soup and sandwiches, as a slaw-style salad like this curried peanut salad, using peanuts from some trail mix which has had all of the other goodies gobbled up. I try to keep a jar of sliced red or green cabbage in the fridge, just waiting to be added to impromptu salad snacking. It's handy stuff for quick side dishes. I don't buy a lot of the usual convenience foods. But I do consider a head of cabbage to be something of a convenience item, as it doesn't require a lot of prep work, and can be ready to eat in minutes.

This time of year, cabbage makes into many of our meals and snacks.

  1. I smiled at the title of your post. Cabbage is very versatile! It frequents our menu, as well. I love coleslaw, as well as slaw with a sweet/sour type dressing. I also love cabbage cooked simply in olive oil with a little salt and pepper.

When I was young, I spent a lot of summer days with my grandparents while my parents were at work. A favorite quick lunch of my grandma's was cooked cabbage, baked beans and bread and butter, with homemade pickles and sliced tomatoes from the garden on the table. I still like that combination.

    Have a lovely day!

  2. I also love cabbage as does my entire family. We especially love cabbage and mashed potatoes all mixed up together with some butter on top and sliced smoked sausage medallions mixed right in. It is something I'm sure I'll have to make when everyone is home for Christmas.

I also freeze a lot of cabbage from dad's garden because it is such an inexpensive veggie to go with any meal and in anything from cooked to salads.

When I cleaned out my freezer I realized that I don't have a lot of cabbage this year. Dad cut back on that but we sure have a TON of green beans which is another cheap and easy food to grow.

I cherish anything I get from dad's garden because I don't know how long it will last. He's 86 years old so I don't have to explain more.

  3. I love cabbage, too. I normally can some for a quick heat and serve side dish. One of our favorite simple slaws is to simply shred our cabbage and carrots and then stir in some Italian salad dressing. It's simple, fresh tasting, and goes well with almost anything. If I want to stretch an Italian dressing based pasta salad the addition of shredded cabbage adds another dimension to it.

  4. We love cabbage here too. My daughter really loves it stir fried. I love cabbage rolls too. It's a great, frugal side dish for sure. :)

  6. I also love cabbage. Fresh leaves cut in thin slices, served under hot entrees local plate lunch style always make me smile. I love that little bit of freshness with an otherwise too flavorful entree. You're right, Lili, cabbage is a very versatile, convenient food that has a rather long refrigerator life. It goes well with many different spices and flavors. Interesting to read how others like to use cabbage with their meals.

    Have a good day!

  7. I should use cabbage more. It's not my favorite, although I like it well enough, so I don't think to purchase it very often. Enjoying reading other's ideas here.

  8. I love all of your ideas for using cabbage. Love the idea, YHF, to put some shredded cabbage under a hot dish. Often I'm not hungry enough for rice, when I make a stir-fry, but shredded cabbage under the meat and veggie dish would work great for me. Like Shara, I make simple slaws using leftover salad dressing, and cabbage, sometimes nothing else. Super easy and convenient. Alice, I'm going to make some mashed potatoes, cabbage and sausage very soon. That sounds very delicious. Polish sausage mixed in with sauteed cabbage is a favorite of mine, so mixing in mashed potatoes sounds like really good comfort food to me. Yummy ideas from all of you. I'll be trying them all in the coming months!

  9. I learned this year you can freeze cabbage leaves to ma!e them pliable for stuffed cabbage instead of blanching. Such yummy ideas now I want cabbage.

  10. Another big cabbage fan here. I just had some last night, sautéed in butter with onion... yum!

So here's a story that might amuse you. One day I was chatting with CatMan about some recipe that contained cabbage. Can't remember exactly what the recipe was, because it was his reaction that I remember. I believe he said something like, "Well, I'm sure there are lots of recipes with cabbage because people had to come up with ways of making terrible foods taste palatable." Apparently he doesn't share my love for cooked cabbage! :-)

  11. We love it here as well. Cabbage and smoked sausage, as mentioned previously. Also, Eggroll in a Bowl (there are many recipes online) which basically tastes like eggroll filling and stretches a little meat a long way in this household. Good for when those Chinese food cravings hit. Mmm.
