the after -- those light spots on the right upper side are light reflections |
The day that I spray painted the styrofoam trough planter pieces brown, I also did a couple of heat vent covers that were looking a little shabby. It took hardly any additional time to add the vents to the spray painting area and very little of the paint.

the before, badly paint splattered |
These vent covers are original to the house, so almost 50 years old. They had paint splatters, rusted edges, and were a battleship gray metal. The two rooms where these were have medium-dark wood floors. The gray metal really stood out as not quite right.
The vents took 2 coats of paint and now look sooooo much better.
It's the little things that are often so easy to fix, yet they complete the mood of a room. In this case, the mood was "polished."
In addition to making the space look better, I find by paying attention to the details, I achieved 3 additional goals. I find I have more satisfaction with what we have been given. I created a more inviting space for welcoming family and guests. And third, by taking care of our property, I've maintained or enhanced its value as an investment.
So glad I did this.
We have spray painted worn vent covers, and it I agree that it's a small thing, but they look so much better and make me happy when I see them. This is one of those things that if someone visited, they would never notice. However, in their old condition they would.
ReplyDeleteHi Live and Learn,
DeleteGreat minds think a like! Yes, I totally agree on this type of item being practically invisible when looking good, but an eyesore when looking shabby.
It's a definite win when small things make us happy. When that happens, I'm grateful and congratulate myself that I didn't need to spend a lot to find the same happiness. In fact, this happens quite often with my crafting and why through the years I've gotten more resourceful. I take the challenge down to trash level and make something that warms my heart. I find that more satisfying than spending a lot on craft supplies. I never thought I would enjoy recycling garments into stitching projects but that's my enjoyment nowadays.
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday,
Laura
Hi Laura,
DeleteI do that too. I think how grateful I am that these tiny (and very inexpensive) things please me so much. I've reminded my husband on many occasions how he married a "cheap date." It takes so little to make me happy. He's saved a fortune by my simple likes.
Yes, the little things matter! Your vent cover looks so nice!
ReplyDeleteIn a similar vein, yesterday I decided to do some outdoor cleaning. I'm hosting a young adult bonfire on Sunday for our church. We don't have a deck--just a large cement slab with some very old furniture, and also a deck storage box. I like to set up the food on the storage box, but it was pretty icky (as was the siding on the house where people would walk by). I spent a fair amount of time cleaning it, and while it doesn't look like new, it was a vast improvement. A little bit of cleaning/painting/zhuzhing goes a long way. :)
Hi Kris,
DeleteGreat job on cleaning up the area for your young adults group!
I did that with the balusters on our deck railing, since I didn't get to painting the upright parts of the railing this summer (dratted shoulder!). I simply took an hour to wash and wipe those parts off. They don't look new, but they look clean, and that matters too.
P.S. I've never heard of "zhuzhing" before. I had to look that one up. Thanks for enriching my vocabulary!
